i've been in the military for a minute now. is it really that hard to get a good job nowadays? i know location varies.
If you are in the military with 4+ years in and are an e-4 or above I would ride it out as long as you can. The benefits and pay if you are getting off base housing and comrats is gonna be a hell of alot more than what most civilian jobs are going to pay you starting off unless you have a sweet hookup with someone on the outside. I'm guessing someone in San Diego without dependents living off base will be taking home somewhere around 2000 dollars a check, good luck finding a civilian job that will match that pay. To this day I still saw more money living off base as an E-5 in new orleans and i got out in 2005. I do alright now but if I stayed in I'd probably be an E-7 by now living in Japan getting caked.
Most of the people I know who got out aren't really doing shit. The handful who are doing better than they did when they were in had top secret clearances and got good jobs for the government. I had a false perception of the civilian sector when I got out thinking because I was a vet I'd get the world handed to me on a silver platter. It didn't work out as well as I planned and honestly think I would have been better off if I stayed in. I learned that civilian jobs have pretty much the same level of control over ones life as the military did, only thing different is you are basically stuck with the same people forever when in the service you get to transfer every 2-3 years.
Basically if you have a job in high demand on the outside like IT or aviation electronics or have a secret or above clearance I'd weigh my options. If you have a job that can be taught to anyone in 1-3 months or isn't in high demand I would wait it out in the service getting as much education as you can handle on your free time. A day doesn't go by where I don't think I had it better and would have had it better if I stayed in the military.
