Mayne I ain't about to start bein afraid of my own shadow. Who watching this speaks English or they dont have any power in this society. Why would I speak anything else. When in Rome do as the Romans. Know thyself. Keep yo friends close, yo enemies closer. Old wisdom, but hey not one of us gonna get anywhere by pretending English isn't neccessary in this world to get ahead. Languages tend to evolve thru centuries of warfaring clan codes anyways wit the conquered learning from the ones who brought heat and assimilatin, trdaing prisoners of war as slaves and wives. Talk about booty.
Consider knowing Spanish in this country an asset as long as you also know English because it is much more important to function across the board. I don't see how it could be anything but advantageous and I don't see why anyone would think of it as a negative thing. Cholos who know it have a leg up because they (obviously) can communicate in many ways which non-Spanish speakers cannot. Who cares where it started, that is the language of Mexico and being that Surenos and Nortenos are really supposed to be Mexican-American... why not speak the language of your past heritage? If you never learned it then whatever who gives a fuck.. but there is nothing wrong with knowing it. Nothing against non-Spanish speakers FOR I DO NOT FLUENTLY SPEAK IT MYSELF. I do understand a great bit of course.
Im sayn the native Aztecs Mayas Hutchuales Navajos etc etc all had to add Spanish to their own native tongue when they got overrun by the Conquistadors. Why people ever gonna assume that cuz you got brown skin and American continent ancestry that you supposed to speak a European language to be authenyicly Mexican at all?? Shit, we got natives in Canadian Quebec talking French, and there were plenty of Dutch and German and other settlers towns all over. Being multilingual can only be a positive thing, but don't ever let some stupid fool say you ain't Norte or you aint Mexican if ya don't speak Spanish. We got plenty of Norte that are all mixed races but identify wit Norte communities and family ties. That "Mr Sur" had a lot of ignorance.

Who's "we"...This kinda complaint can only be made by a NATIVE INDIAN from Mexico... lemme stress this again MEXICAN is NOT A RACE, its a NATIONALITY. its like assuming the only "real" americans are white, blonde haired and blue eyed. Divide Mexicans into the 3 major groups; european (about 10-15%), striaght up native (not sure about this percentage... 10% i think?), and mestizo (mixed european and native bout 70% of the population if i remember).
And about no one caring about race anymore, peep out the spanish channel and notice how only the light-brown to white hispanics make up the majority from the news to the novelas, lol
racism and prejudice is even in latin-american countries, so expect it to be here too... unfotunately
I am a native american indian (including several tribes Apache, Navajo, Cherokee, Creek) and mixed wit white and raised from in-law mexican families in norte varrios--Iam agreeing wit you 110% I meant we as in "why everybuddy expect Nortes to speak Spanish cuz for a lot Spanish never was their native language or if it was it was generations ago English speaking Mexicans been here before CA joined the USA, before the gold rush, before you--it's not like most Norte are new immigrants --Norte been English speakers more than spanish speakers almost for eons"
