HOW THE FUCK YOU GONNA BE SCREAMIN L.A. OR THE BAY, OR WHATEVER, AND BE WAVIN A MEXICAN FLAG... IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE TO ME... DONT GET ME WRONG, I DONT GO WAVIN AMERICAN FLAGS LIKE THE MINUTEMEN, EITHER...
i agree.. my parents were born and raised in mexico but i was born here in america. I speak both languages, being mexican american you dont get respect on either side of the border.

I disagree with you homie, I think the more multi-cultural this country is the better, and the more accepting it is of different cultures the better. Look at Europe, they're not trying to make it only one culture, one language, one people. They are a union of a bunch of different cultures and people who are very different, yet they all come together without having only one culture as superior to the rest.

And people claiming something other than "American" is a huge statement and is part of being proud of where you come from, and also recognizing that this country is made up of different people from all around the world and you can't have one uniform language and culture for everybody, it's racist, nativist, and xenophobic!

Yeah, I certainly understand the PRIDE part. It's a big statement like your saying.

But my whole point is, why don't the whites refer to where they come from then? If they ain't referring, then we shouldn't either. It ain't hard to say German-American. However, if they do refer to their origins, then we all should, it's only fair. I just think it singles us out when us Mexicans, Africans, Chinese,etc.. have to say it and they don't.

I definitely like Mexican-American over, Hispanic, Latino and Chicano.

Don't worry what others label you homie, identity comes from what YOU claim and what you want to refer to yourself as. Identity among Raza is a huge problem that a lot of negativity stems from. (Look at Nortenos vs Surenos)

Whites don't do it because it doesn't benefit them. Is that hard to understand?

We do it because of pride, because we actually care about our past and we won't sacrifice it and forget about it just to "assimilate" to the United States and fit in. Italians and Irish faced lots of discrimination in this country early on in the 20th century, but they assimilated. Now you see a bunch of whites instead of people claiming the actual country where they came from.

The thing is, no matter what we call ourselves, the dominant group will still look at us as an "other". We will never look white, we will never be white, so why should we try and assimilate? To me, it's selling your own culture and traditions out for whiter ones. And even then, we still don't get equality! I'm not talking shit, I'm just calling it as I see it...

Of course not. I'm saying the majority of white people rather take all the benefits that go with being white and just that. Of course there are plenty of white people who are proud of their actual heritage, I'm just saying majority. Can you argue that?

Yeah, your right about those labels. But then again, most of us Mexicans will refer to them as being either white or black as well. So it's the same shit. Whatever rolls off the tongue easier, I guess.

The only thing is, the media will label us as either Hispanic, Latino, Mexican-American and on rare occasions or local level, Chicano.

were all AMERICAN = north AMERICAN, central AMERICAN, and south AMERICAN.. END of DISCUSSION..
The discussion has to do with what people identify themselves as, but I do agree with your point that we're all Americans, from Chile to Canada. The problem though, lays with the unequal distribution of wealth and resources. If we were all American, we would all have the same access to wealth and resources.

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying whites SHOULD infact refer to themselves as German-American, Irish-American, Norwegian-American, Sweedish-American,etc.. If people of Mexican decent have to put Mexican before American, whites should as well to distinguish themselves better.

Fuck it just call me Brown. If their black and white, then I'm Brown.

I consider myself Peruvian-American. no disrespect to any other latin american ethnicities. I'm not a nationalist or anything, I just think people from latin america come from various different backgrounds and cultures.
