Word, Lil G, i 'preciate you noticin! im tryin, im tryin..people talkin about my stee and all that, and im lettin it go...its cool, i could fuck wit that....on to the mixtape explination (and no, it aint gonna take but a couple sentences!)
Mixtape is like a big ass soup or somethin, kinda. Spaghetti is like an album cuz its Noodles (rhymes), and Sauce (the beat), and the seasoning is the experience of the rapper, ya underdig?! But mixtapes aint no pasta shit, they soup...you got the peas, carrots, meat, potatas, umm..green beans if you get down like that....its a whole mixture of shit ! it aint gonna keep you "full", but its a start, nah mean...
Alternate version (for Sane people): Its a big mix of tracks or track snippets from album promo's, samplers, compilations; then they throw in 4-5 freestyles (so it doesnt sound like DJ America Online made it), some commentary/introduction inbetween tracks (sometimes, a "guest host", much like the person that hosts an award show like the Emmy's or the Grammy's)...broken down like a list:
Commentary from a DJ and/or "Host"
New Songs
New "Radio Singles"
Remixes (New Artists)
Remixes (New Beats)
Freestyles
Song Snippets
OG Songs (Original Versions)
Blends
And whatever other odds and ends...
Overall, a mixtape is like a VERY organized Promo for an ENTIRE area...dont confuse it with a COMPILATION though!!!
**Compilations have EXCLUSIVE tracks--tracks that are ONLY on the ONE compilation album and NOWHERE ELSE...
**Mixtapes have ALBUM tracks--tracks you make for your album, but wanna put on a mixtape instead of a bitch-ass mp3.com page!
If you play a beat like "bling bling", and freestyle for 2 minutes over it, and its the hottest freestyle you done ever spit in your life...you're FUCKED if you wanna put it on an Album/Compilation, cuz you'll get your ass SUED!!! But for mixtapes, usin other people's beats is alright, cuz mixtapes dont make money (or, aint supposed to...dont tell dj clue that, though )
--Which is why Jay-Z made the "Supa Ugly" freestyle (against Nas) over a Dre beat and didnt put it on his album, BUT, Nas made ether over an ALBUM beat so he could drop it on his LP...
Maybe this was 4 pages..ahahaha...sorry...but i feel strongly about gettin mixtapes started circulatin in the NorthWest.....you can put it on casette tapes or on CD's, which is the same....EXCEPT...when you got some lame ass puttin 18 full length tracks on a CD, THAT IS NOT A MIXTAPE!! and it doesnt help the game much, either...if anything it FUCKS IT UP!
Mixtapes, on average, are only gonna have about 10 full length songs or less....and during the songs, the DJ talks and yells shoutouts and acts annoying at random times, COMPLETELY fucking up the whole "i dont need the album now cuz i already got the song from it i wanted!" concept........the rest of the 40 minutes is str8 promo spittin, for FREE type stuff...
When you look on the east coast, you can judge the VERY BEST emcees by how much they appear on mixtapes....if a rapper releases albums, and aint got a handfull of freestyles on mixtapes, FORGET ABOUT IT!!! The streets wont even get behind em....even FABOLOUS got like a dozen mixtape freestyles!
SUMMARY: Mixtapes = GOOD, Mixtape Compilations = WACK...Mixtapes = Easy to contribute, just tell the DJ its cool to drop your track on it.....Mixtape COmpilations = WASTE OF TIME, want "exclusive" tracks, and 95% of the time, THEY'RE BITCHES ABOUT WHO "CAN" AND "CANT" APPEAR ON EM! talkin on some "We only want established artists" BULLShiT!! FUCK THAT!!! ...aight, sorry bout that, heheheh
Hope this helped.... now, start recordin them freestyles, and savin em for later! If i aint the first TRUE NorthWest Mixtape DJ...ima be one of THE first, so sit tight, its gon be a minute, then its on!!
