Do you know, how much it would take to get Vernon Wells, at the Most, Matt Cain, and Nate Schierholtz, at the most, at the Least Matt Cain, and some other pitching prospect. That's too much.

hey you gotta pay whatever it takes (and it's nice to see the cubs spending money for once), especially if he does indeed want to stay on the west coast.....unfortunately that turned out to be false information. see below

Cubs deny offering Schmidt huge deal

An Internet report that the Cubs were offering San Francisco free-agent pitcher Jason Schmidt as much as $45 million for three years is unfounded, sources said Tuesday night.

The Cubs are not believed to have made a solid offer, certainly not at those figures.

The team, however, does have interest in the 33-year-old right-hander and has talked to his agents several times, knowing it might take more money to lure him to the Midwest from the West Coast.

The favorites in the Schmidt derby are the Dodgers, who have money to spend, and Seattle, which is near where Schmidt grew up.

General manager Brian Sabean and executive vice president Larry Baer spoke late Monday via conference call with Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, who's playing hardball and, according to a major-league source, asked the Giants for an $18 million, one-year contract plus a vesting option that could bring a similar salary in 2008.

Such a proposal, which matches the average annual salary of Bonds' previous pact, seems ridiculously high for someone with so many legal issues who'll be 44 at the end of the contract, if it reaches fruition. But to reiterate, when the subject is Bonds, you never know.

Clearly, the Giants don't want to pay that much. Nevertheless, Sabean insisted Monday they have genuine interest in the left fielder and that proposals and counterproposals have been exchanged.

"Does it make baseball sense?" asked Sabean. "Yes."

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- It was a big roster-bolstering day for the Giants on Monday at the Winter Meetings.
The club inked former infield fixture Rich Aurilia to a two-year deal worth around $8 million, re-signed third baseman Pedro Feliz to a one-season pact and have reportedly agreed to a contract with ex-Toronto catcher Bengie Molina.

Molina's three-year contract hinges on the 32-year-old veteran passing a physical, according to Yahoo.com. His signing has been immiment, especially with veteran Mike Matheny still recovering from post-concussion syndrome and unlikely to return next year.
