South Carolina inmates get a combined total of 20 years in solitary confinement for posting "music" video online

Seven inmates serving time for serious crimes ranging from armed robbery, burglary, and voluntary manslaughter, have collectively been sentenced to nearly 20 years in solitary confinement after a video they made hit the Internet.

The problem? They made it in prison – and social media and the like are frowned upon.

Their punishment came to 7,150 days, or 19.75 years, in solitary confinement in the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

The men recorded a video entitled “I’m On” last March and uploaded it to YouTube and WorldStarHipHop. It’s already brought in over a million views.

Five of the seven men will spend 180 days in solitary, while the other two inmates received 270 and 360 days for ‘creating or assisting with a social media site.’

On top of all that, all the so-called ‘good time’ earned, visitation, commissary usage, and phone usage was erased – years worth.

Aside from the obvious cell phone contraband used to record the video, the inmates made some 38 Facebook posts and other related things against the rules.

But the prison claims it wasn’t the video and social media alone that caused such harsh punishments.

“Their placement is not just tied to that rap video,” Stephanie Givens, a spokesperson for the South Carolina Department of Corrections told BuzzFeed News. “It’s the fact that they are gang members and a continued threat to safety."
