Freddy Sanchez hoping to avoid season-ending shoulder surgery

Freddy Sanchez will hope to avoid season-ending surgery on his right shoulder, resting his arm in a sling for several weeks before he and doctors determine the level of instability in his stretched and damaged capsule.
But even if Sanchez can return to the field in 2011, he is likely to require surgery to tighten the capsule after the season, Giants head trainer Dave Groeschner said.
“It’s a concern, obviously,” Groeschner said. “Any time you dislocate, you’re at greater risk for (another) dislocation. He’s an athlete. He’ll be diving around.”
An MRI exam showed that Sanchez damaged his labrum and stretched out his shoulder capsule when he made a diving attempt on a ground ball Friday. He consulted with Dr. Ken Akizuki and will see another othopedist in Arizona this weekend.
Sanchez had left shoulder surgery each of the past two offseasons, but this injury could be an even greater concern because it involves his throwing arm. While it’s common for football players to have unstable shoulder capsules tightened, the results have been mixed for infielders; several years ago, promising prospect Marcus Sanders had his career end prematurely after undergoing the procedure.
However it turns out, it’s clear Sanchez will be out for a prolonged period. He’ll begin range-of-motion exercises once he is able.
“We’ll have to see how he heals up,” Groeschner said.
