i tried walking him through the uninstall and letting xp scan for hardware changes and got nothing

if your using a ati setup and your using a HDMI cord for your monitor..the audio might of switched over to it..and unless ur monitor has inbuilt speakers..there will be no audio.. so disabling the audio for the HDMI might bring back your original setup.
