The Warriors have been approved by the NBA for another injury exception. So they can add a player even though they already have 15 players under contract plus center Chris Hunter, who was called up from the NBA Development League as the team's first exception.
But the Warriors aren't going to use it. Not yet, anyway. A team source said the Warriors would wait until after Jan. 5, which is the date teams can start signing players to 10-day contracts.
A couple Warriors insiders said the team is eyeing Cartier Martin, a 6-foot-7, 220-pound small forward currently playing for the Iowa Energy in the D-League.
Warriors coach Don Nelson said he wanted to add a small forward. Corey Maggette is the only true small forward healthy, forcing Nelson to go with guards Anthony Morrow and C.J. Watson at that position.
Golden State likes Martin, who was on the Warriors' summer league team in Las Vegas. The Warriors invited him to training camp in October, but Martin opted to go overseas.
But by waiting, Warriors management can get a good look at the team with centers Andris Biedrins and Ronny Turiaf back on the court. Also, the Warriors can scout the potentials at the D-League Showcase in Boise, Idaho, from Jan. 4-7.
The Warriors are able to add another player because four of their players — forward Brandan Wright, center Mikki Moore, guard
Raja Bell and swingman Kelenna Azubuike — won't be returning before March.
