I think its up to our safties Hiram Eugene and Mike Mitchell to step up....I'm not expecting Huff to be around....I think Mike Mitchell's hits fits right in with the "build a bully" mentality.

I just hope McClain lays another hit like he did on Sproles.....but EVERY WEEK!

Resigned huff!

And top 2 teams that wants to sign Cromartie is the raiders and jets. If it ain't some OVER the top contract, I'd looove to sign Cromartie. He's def no Aso but still one of the better corners in the game.

I thought I heard them say on NFL Network that we resigned Huff... not sure though
guess you're right

The Tyvon Branch to free safety experiment ended Sunday, as Oakland re-signed Michael Huff. Huff, who can't practice until Thursday, didn't get a lot of attention on the free agent market and the Raiders likely got a good price on a returning starter.

The 7th overall pick by the Raiders in the 2006 draft, Huff struggled his first few years but had his best season last year when he also played a little cornerback and was very effective blitzing the quarterback.

Branch returns to strong safety, and Mike Mitchell goes back to a backup role -- though he does play a lot in nickel situations.

NFL.com, meanwhile is reporting that the Raiders are trying to outbid the Jets for free agent cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

lol @ DHB......make that foo a cornerback already or cut him

Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey was out again for practice Saturday -- the team's first in pads -- and said he is close to returning. "Day to day," he said.
Coach Hue Jackson won't say what's wrong with DHB, and neither will DHB.

"I can't really say," Heyward-Bey said. "Just trying to get back, trying to get ready. I am in meetings and everything, staying on top of everything and being a coach on the sidelines."

When I asked him if the injury was above the waist or below the waist, Heyward-Bey said, "It might be a toothache."

Chaz Schilens, meanwhile, continued to look good and Jackson said the oft-injured receiver is "100 percent" health-wise.

"He's going," Jackson said. "He's out there making plays, making catches He's done a tremendous job. He looks like Chaz toward the end of the year. He hasn't budged from anything. I'm excited that he's out here every day."

Asked Jackson what Schilens brings to the mix that the other WRs don't.

"It's not that he brings something that they don't have -- it's just that he's a big physical player. He's a big man. He's fast and he's tough and he's courageous and he loves the sport. We just have to keep him healthy and keep him out there. I think he's a huge asset to our team. I'm glad that he's healthy and competing every day in practice."

Briefly: Rookie cornerback Chimdi Chekwa left practice when his left shoulder popped out. ... Jackson was asked about free agent tight end Zach Miller and laughed, saying "We're working" on it. ... The Raiders re-signed fullback Marcel Reece, an unrestricted free agent, and veteran linebacker Sam Williams. They also added undrafted free agent Derrick Hill, a defensive tackle at Cal.

Raiders re-sign FS Huff

By Steve Corkran
Sunday, July 31st, 2011 at 11:29 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders announced the re-signing of veteran free safety Michael Huff on Sunday.

Huff was an unrestricted free agent after spending his first five seasons with the Raiders. He likely will remain in the starting role he has occupied for most of his NFL career.

The Raiders still are toying with the prospect of finding a better mix among their safeties, with Tyvon Branch, Mike Mitchell and Stevie Brown pushing for starting spots and enhanced roles.

Huff blossomed into a solid player two seasons ago, and the Raiders were intent upon bringing him back. Huff, like other players who signed new deals, is not eligibile to practice until Aug. 4.

Today’s practice begins at 3:30 p.m. We will keep an eye out for Huff on the field and seek comment.

Raiders pursue CB Cromartie

By Steve Corkran
Sunday, July 31st, 2011 at 11:48 am in Oakland Raiders.

NFL.com is reporting that the Raiders and New York Jets are in hot pursuit of free agent cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

A Raiders front-office person admitted that the Raiders have a burning need for a veteran cornerback who can step right in and replace departed Pro Bowler Nnamdi Asomugha. At the same time, he said, the Raiders aren’t going to break the bank for Cromartie.

Also, the Raiders have invested quite a bit in finding a replacement for Asomugha the past two years. They selected Walter McFadden, Jeremy Ware, Chimdi Chekwa and DeMarcus Van Dyke in the past two NFL drafts in hopes one of them emerges as a viable candidate.

For now, the Raiders are looking at veteran Chris Johnson opposite Stanford Routt. There’s also the possibility of free safety Michael Huff making the conversion after spending his first five NFL seasons at safety.

There are those with the Raiders who are confident Huff could make a seamless transition to cornerback. Huff has played the position at times in recent seasons but only in certain situations and for a down here and there.

Cromartie teamed with Darrelle Revis last year to give the Jets, perhaps, the most imposing cornerback tandem in the league. He certainly wouldn’t mind returning to the Jets but only if the price is right. He said he won’t give the Jets a hometown discount.

Once the Raiders wrap up restructuring the contract of linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, they would be in position to throw some real money at Cromartie.
