Athletics To Sign Yoenis Cespedes
The Athletics continued their offseason stockpiling of young talent with the ultimate free agent addition, signing 26-year-old Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to a four-year, $36MM contract that allows him to reach free agency at its conclusion. Yahoo's Tim Brown first reported the agreement, while Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle added financial details and the yearly breakdown. Adam Katz of Wasserman Media Group represents Cespedes.

The A's have been aggressive on international talent in past years, though CBS Sports' Danny Knobler suggests they were a late entrant on Cespedes. The A's made a big bid for lefty Aroldis Chapman two years ago, and have now topped Chapman's record contract for a Cuban player. More significantly, the A's gave Cespedes $36MM over four years, as opposed to the six-year term preferred by the Marlins and other suitors. He'll reach the open market once again as a 30-year-old. Cespedes may benefit from some minor league seasoning, but ESPN's Buster Olney tweets that he'll get a shot right away to become Oakland's everyday right fielder.

Given his age, perhaps Cespedes should not be compared to top MLB prospects. Still, Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein would rank him 20th in baseball and Baseball America's Jim Callis would put him in the 7-15 range. Cespedes is a premium athlete with huge raw power, plenty of speed, and a strong arm. His hit tool and defensive value are more of a question.

The A's added top prospects such as Jarrod Parker, A.J. Cole, Derek Norris, and Brad Peacock this winter by trading Gio Gonzalez and Trevor Cahill, while Andrew Bailey brought the A's Josh Reddick and others. With his entire outfield up for free agency, A's GM Billy Beane allowed David DeJesus and Josh Willingham to leave, re-signed Coco Crisp, signed Cespedes and Jonny Gomes, and acquired Reddick, Collin Cowgill, and Seth Smith. Despite his lack of MLB and minor league experience, Cespedes is Oakland's highest-paid player, topping Crisp in 2012 by $500K. The window to add premium young international talent by spending eight digits on a player is closing quickly, as the new collective bargaining agreement calls for a $2.9MM per team cap beginning with the July 2012 signing period.

Though MLB executives have been following Cespedes' play for the Cuban national team for years, the general public was introduced to him with a Star Wars-like scroll and the Christopher Cross light rock tune "Sailing," which appear within the first three minutes of this ridiculous promotional video. Cespedes defected from the Cuban team in July of last year, establishing residency in the Dominican Republic and then becoming an MLB free agent. He was recently unblocked by The Office of Foreign Asset Control according to Brown (on Twitter). Goldstein tweets Cespedes is expected to arrive in Phoenix for a physical in one to two weeks, and he's already cleared his age and identity investigation and has been drug tested.
Awesome signing. I like this guy a lot. There's a log jam in the outfield now, but I think that will work itself out. If you look at this optimistically, you kinda have to with everything A's related lol, you'll have one of the world's top prospects entering his prime entering a new stadium. Along side most of the A's prospects coming to fruition. And if the A's have something on the ball they will resign him, or have the option of trading him out for top-shelf prospects. Stay optimistic, and look at what the A's will be playing with in the near future. I like it.

I just read they're the front runners for Manny as well, wonder what this signing means for that.
Yup, I heard theyre kinda the only ones left since the O's and Jays have cooled on him. I dont think it would mean much for Manny, he would only be drawing around $1 mill for the season and DHing. I think it has the most impact of Kila and Carter. If they dont sign Manny theyll compete for the DH spot, but if they sign Manny, Kila will have to bide his time and Carter might be SOL, which Im fine with, tired of waiting on him.

What a crazy offseason? What became apparent after yesterday is that aside from Billy Beane stock piling young arms, also does the same for outfield options. With 8 outfielders on the roster (9 if you count Brandon Allen), what combination of this will be the most effective for the A's?
A quick look at this shows that 3 different combo of these OF lineups yield between 5-6 WAR. To reference the Willingham/Sweeney/DeJesus 2011 OF, that trio combined for 6.9 WAR. It appears that the CAIRO projections for everyone but Crisp and Cespedes are around 1 WAR for a full 650 PA. What this tells me is that these parts are super interchangeable. The hope is that either the platoon of Gomes/Smith is a success, or Josh Reddick will play beyond his projections.

The A's won't retain all these players, and some will get sent down to start the season. It is definitely crowded right now though. Stoked we got Cespedes, he might strike out a lot but he'll do everything else. And they will trade him in June if he's doing good. Raul Mondesi part dos

Rangers, Athletics Getting Closer To Uehara Deal
12:57pm: The Rangers and Athletics are "getting close" to a trade involving reliever Koji Uehara, reports Joe Stiglich of the San Jose Mercury News (via Twitter). The A's are known to be looking for relief help, with Uehara and free agent Mike Gonzalez the two names most frequently connected to the club. Texas has also been connected to Gonzalez and in fact have been trying to create payroll space for that signing by dealing Uehara.

Uehara has a partial no-trade clause in his contract and has already blocked one deal this winter that would've sent him to Toronto. It's unknown if the A's are one of the other five teams on Uehara's no-trade list.

Manny works out for A's, could sign soon
PHOENIX -- Oakland's interest in veteran free agent Manny Ramirez is still very much alive, and it appears the club could sign the embattled slugger within the next week.

Baseball sources confirmed to MLB.com that A's officials recently traveled to Florida to observe Ramirez's workouts. If the two sides reach an agreement, Ramirez would earn slightly more than the league minimum of $480,000, according to the Associated Press.

Ramirez would be utilized by the A's as a designated hitter, but not before serving a 50-game suspension stemming from his second violation of MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, meaning he wouldn't be paid or allowed to participate in a game until as early as June 2
However, Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal recently reported that he can play in not only Spring Training games, but extended Spring Training games, giving the A's more time to evaluate him. In addition, he would be able to work out with either Major or Minor League teams, so long as he leaves before the gates open for fans. He can also participate in a 10-game Minor League rehab assignment as his suspension nears its end.

Nevertheless, the addition of Ramirez -- whose tarnished reputation has factored into the little interest he's receiving from other teams -- would undoubtedly make for the most peculiar move made by general manager Billy Beane during an eventful offseason. Still, it's a low-risk one, and the A's could use the power threat.

Oakland enters camp without a proven bat in the middle of the order and is coming off a season in which it ranked 12th in the American League in runs. Much is expected of Yoenis Cespedes, whose four-year, $36 million deal with the A's should become official soon, but it's worth remembering that the Cuban defector has never faced Major League pitching.

Then there's Seth Smith, Coco Crisp and Jonny Gomes, who, though capable of bringing in runs, don't combine for the power residing in the lineups of division counterparts Texas and Los Angeles.

Ramirez, who turns 40 in May, doesn't represent a quick fix, but he carries with him an impressive resume. Through 19 seasons, the 12-time All-Star is a career .312 hitter with 555 home runs -- good for 14th on the all-time list -- and 1,831 RBIs.

He most recently went 1-for-17 in five games last season for Tampa Bay before retiring rather than serving a 100-game suspension after a second violation that was ultimately cut in half.

Initially a first-round pick by the Indians in 1991, Ramirez spent the first eight years of his Major League career with Cleveland before signing a free-agent deal with Boston, where he played for seven-plus seasons. He also spent time with the Dodgers and White Sox before his short stint with the Rays.

The A's have also been linked to Magglio Ordonez, and it's possible he becomes their next target if they don't reel in Ramirez. Hideki Matsui also remains an option, but more of a long shot. However, Oakland is first expected to acquire a reliever and is one of several teams interested in a trade for Texas' Koji Uehara, along with free agent Michael Gonzalez.

Athletics signed DH Manny Ramirez to a minor league contract.
Ramirez will earn a salary of $500,000 if he eventually lands a spot on Oakland's 25-man roster and is able to maintain it. The 39-year-old still has to serve a 50-game PED suspension and seems doubtful to take on anything more than a part-time DH role once he is finally cleared to play.

I hate Manny Ramirez with a passion but it's a great move. It's gonna put people in the seats and keep the A's relevant at all. It's crazy how much people HATE Barry Bonds but this fuckin asshole RETIRES FIRST to avoid serving 100 games. This is his second offense, and it's a fucking joke! As sad as it is, the A's need veteran leadership.

Also I was watching CSN and Jonny Gomes was wearing a hat that said "Petalocos." He's from Petaluma, that's hella funny

It's a good pick up. A veteran bat with plenty of potential power. Definately worth it for 1/2 million. You get a chance to see what Manny has, have him work his kinks out while you try out whoever else at DH. I dont like Manny either, but its good for the team. I'd expect the koji uehara deal follow in the next few days.

Manny Ramirez's deal with the A's has led to some "mixed results" in the Athletics' clubhouse, writes Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Ramirez's ex-teammates Coco Crisp and Bartolo Colon are in favor of the move, while one unnamed player "expressed concern" that if Ramirez makes the team, he'll be taking away at-bats from younger players who will be a bigger part of Oakland's future.
Lol, so it begins.

"We're not doing it to be mean," says Beane, aware of the trades' impact on the team and its shrinking fan base. "It's not like I come into this office like I just jumped off the stage of Wicked with a green-painted face and go, 'How can I trade my guys?' We do it because we have no other choice."

thats one of the funniest thing ive ever heard. its fuckin true.

Thats what I dont get when everybody questions beane, wtf is he supposed to do? You cant improve a team that did so poorly with no money. I think if you look at this offseason honestly, dude is brilliant.
