I'll give my review on this a little later.
If you guys liked my Shutter Island review, I'll try and keep this review in the same vein. Hopefully, reviewing films [and not just saying "d00d iz good!] catches on in this board.
A little late but whatever...
Synopsis:
A small rural town in Iowa (or some other bumfuck state) begins to experience a few of it's inhabitants acting psychotic due to what seems to be a loss of cognitive and social interaction skills. Little do they know that this psychosis is actually attributed to an accident caused when the federal government's attempt to clean up a biological weapon that was specifically engineered to create chaos in small populations goes awry. Eventually all shit breaks lose and the marines are sent to the town to clean up.
The good:
1. Great story. It's not revolutionary and it is pretty cliche...but then again what zombie movie doesn't have the same recycled plot? If it works, it works, amirite?
2. Characters
You have a main character that is given enough time to develop so that when shit goes down you care about how his sense of duty, morals, and priorities as a soon to be father influence his actions. And because we see the movie through his eyes the rest of the cast doesn't need to be fully realized. Just knowing that they come together around the protagonist was enough for me to believe that this group of zombie survivalists came together
His wife isn't as fleshed out but because he is you empathize with him and his need to go back for her and save her. Their future and that of their unborn child make this more than just a battle to survive.
The deputy was pretty bad ass. And although I didn't really care if he lived or died he was a pretty decent secondary character that solidifies the sheriffs role as the towns protector and "go to man."
3. Zombies
I heard that George Romero had a hand in this movie and it shows. I mean you have zombies! Sure they weren't undead but at least they weren't the shitty zombies that you see recently. Personally, I've always been a fan of the creepier slower moving zombie. Make no mistake, these zombies aren't as slow as the one's in Dawn of the Dead, a few times they make quick sudden movements where they rush at the characters and add realism to the whole "a slow brainless person infecting and systematically destroying human society" thing that most people might not necessarily buy when they think of slow undead gimps.
4. A nod to classic horror films!
I hate cgi. I hate special effects. And I hate super duper complicated monsters. What made this movie so great was that the zombies weren't as scary as the atmosphere. Remember movies from the 80's? Before CGI? When it wasn't so much the monsters that would pop out and scare you but the feeling that you never quite knew WHEN the monster would pop out and get you? Well, this movie has that same feel.
The bad:
1. It's a cheesy horror film and with cheesy horror films comes the fact that the group of protagonists will always be completely fucking stupid. I know, I know, if they were smart the movie wouldn't be as good as it was, but I can't help but think of all the shit they could have done to save themselves.
Recommendation:
Definitely go. Pay full price if you have to. It's a great movie and you won't feel ripped off like you would had you gone to another of it's contemporaries.
