I don't know why people complaining about the Hyphy movement

I grew up listening to that mobb music. We have been making that music for years and that's coo. But times do change and people seem to forget that. This hyphy thing is the reason why the bay has the spotlight right now. It was really bad a few years back. I remember when Kmel wasn't playing anything from the bay. The only time they did was on sunday nights at 11:00pm after Street Soilders. Now we see the bay all on MTV representing and KMEL supporting the local artists.
The old school heads should be hella happy that this generation of youngstas are getting down and bringing it back here.
I have no problem w/ hyphy existing...the thing that I don't dig is people acting like hyphy is ALL there is Bay-wise. Not so. Life isn't ALL about going stupid, getting dumb, shaking your dreads, etc., and like someone on a previous thread said, the majority of folks in the Bay (when you get down to it) don't ALL get hyphy. Some do, certainly, but most don't.

So, if all the Bay rappers turn hyphy just to sell, the media and major labels will say, "hyphy is ALL that the Bay is about." The consequence could be that once the hyphy sound would start to fade, the Bay could wind up tossed out on its' ass again, unable to get signed by the majors, who see the Bay as a one-trick pony musically (when it isn't). I hope that if the hyphy thing gets bigger nationally, maybe the doors will open for other non-hyphy styles, so that if/when hyphy fades, some other Bay style can ease its' way in to take hyphy's place sales-wise. That way, the mainstream can be introduced to other (non-hyphy) facets of Bay music, thus causing the Bay's sales to continue. If hyphy can serve as a stepping stone for other styles in the Bay to eventually get national attention as well, I'll support it (E-40 and The Mossie's new CDs are both slappin', to name two). Just my opinion, though, and everyone is entitled to theirs as well.

PEACE!

I definitely see what you are sayin. To me, I honestly don't think the companies will be very eager to give something that's not hyphy a chance, but I think The Bay will be in good shape if the hyphy style evolves into something else. To me, there are a lotta songs and artists from the Bay who wouldn't be considered hyphy if they were in a different city or region, and all you would really have to do is take out a few of the words they use and it would just be regular club music. I think The Team is like that because they have a universal club sound, and some of their beats don't sound hyphy.

Thing is, hyphy is so much different from the other styles in the Bay, it might be hard for somebody to like both who's not in The Bay. Like I was sayin earlier, The Bay is definitely not the only one who has had this dilemma. In the 90's, it was impossible for somebody in Miami/Florida to blow oup who didn't sound like Luke, and it is still hard for people in regions that sell off of the same style to blow up. Why do you think Little Brother has such a hard time makin it, being that they are from North Carolina but sound nothing like the rest of the south?

If anything...just hope that the hyphy movement will wake up the CEOs and companies and let them know that there is potential for money in the Bay and on the west in general, and if it is pushed right, it could have potential to blow. I always feel that anything can blow up if it is "force fed", whether it's great music or it's trash. The more people hear somethin, the more they like it, and that's just a rule of life. So it's all up to the people with the white collars, business suits, and big offices to decide what blows up.
