AFC Notes:
• The AFC wishes it could call a do-over on Week One. To who, exactly, am I supposed to give the first-round byes here? Last week's choices, San Diego and New England, were, to say the least, uninspiring. Pittsburgh showed some pretty substantial flaws against Tennessee. Baltimore struggled with Kansas City for much of the game., and one week isn't enough time to get comfortable with anyone else as one of the top two teams in the conference. I don't know what to do.
• I'll give the nod to Pittsburgh, because they at least beat a good team. New England gets the second spot because divisional alignment prevents me from giving it to Baltimore, and San Diego damn sure can't have it.
• The Chargers still have to be a division champion, though. They did beat a division rival on the road, which, at the end of the day, still counts for something. Kansas City's a little closer in the rearview this week than they were last week, but Denver's still a good distance back, despite their "win" over the Bengals.
• The Jets sledgehammered their way into the picture in Week One with their thorough and convincing win over the Titans, perhaps the only thorough and convincing win any AFC team had. I even gave them a few seconds of thought as a first-round bye, but again, I need more time to get comfortable with that idea.
• That same game, obviously, shoved the Texans out of the picture entirely. We may even change the locks on them.
• I didn't want to knock Indianapolis out, but it had to be done to make room for the Jets. Jacksonville's not far out of the picture, either.
NFC Notes:
• The NFC is a lot more clear-cut than the AFC. There's no one here who got their spot begrudgingly. I'm completely comfortable handing all the prime real estate to those who occupy it.
• No changes in the first-round byes here. New Orleans, obviously, earned the right to stay, and while I'd have liked to see more offense from Green Bay, their defense was spectacular against Chicago. No reason to make any changes among the top two.
• Dallas didn't do anything to lose their spot, but at the end of the day, I thought the Giants looked better. Philadelphia, obviously, looked great, too, but I'm going to give the division edge to the team with the healthy-ribbed quarterback.
• Knocking on the door in the NFC: Chicago and Atlanta. Standing somewhere just off the porch, waving in a friendly manner, is San Francisco. No one's about to let them in, but we have noticed them through the window.
