What a dick.
It's business. Retail makes their mark-up, when Travis/SM sells it direct they are cutting out the middle man, and the profit % is way higher (acting as the distributor + retailer). I'm sure Strange would have loved selling the pre-order at 9.99 (would have sold way more), but then retail stores have to compete with that, with their already lower margins and guess what, they are going to get pissed and probably order fewer copies. It is hard work keeping everybody happy.

Billboard is an industry mag and I don't believe it is sold retail. I know subscriptions are ridiculous expensive. Being an industry mag also explains why the emphasis is on finance and not the music.
Yeah. They charge like $24.95 a month for the Magazine and access to Billboard.biz, or $299.00 for a year. They sell back-issues of just the magazine though, but...:
