There has been some debate as to what success really is for Tech. Some people think it has to do with mainstream fame. Some people think it is when he starts doing collabs with so called "major" artists and producers. Some people think its when he's a multimillionaire. Has the mission been fully accomplished? Not fully, but pretty goddamn close.
Strange Music has made history in the music business. Real history, it has been recognized briefly by everyone, from Jay-Z to Ice Cube. Venue owners, MTV, you name it. Whether or not it has been a sustained trip in the world's lime light is definitely questionable, but it does not define its success.
Let me give you an entirely different perspective that is a bit more detailed than Tech doing a 7 person show in San Diego.
How about cross country trips in Vans, 3 or four guys sleeping on the floor. Guys like Big Nick, Joe, Kaliko, and Kutt. None of these guys are small guys. Big Nick snores pretty loud too, lol. There was no "extra" money, Krizz wasn't officially signed yet, hell he was still the MC at Satin Dolls, where Big Nick, Joe, and Matt were bouncers. Shit Krizz was still living directly next door to me with his mother in a modest duplex. Strange Music was an extremely small budget venture fueled by guys that really believed in it. There were no guarantees for anyone.
Offices on the west coast, touring on the east coast, merchandise sales, shows overseas.
None of it compares to:
Travis O'guin wanting to have a successful venture into the music business and accomplishing it with an MC that deserved it more than anyone.
Tech N9ne getting what he has always deserved and continually getting more. Having his family taken care of with no worries. Taking care of his fans by never shorting them.
Krizz Kaliko getting a deal, dropping his debut album, taking care of his mother, getting married to the girl he always loved and providing for his new baby.
Kutt Kalhoun dropping an album, taking care of his children, having a full page in the source for advertisement for his sophomore album, and not having to stay in street shit to eat.
Joe Vertigo getting a verse on a nationwide album release (mlk) he has been protecting Tech for a long long time and nobody is more alert than he is.
Big Nick and the fellas starting thier company.
Wives and girlfriends getting a chance to exhale because this turned into what everybody said it would.
Wherever Strange Music goes from here, whether it be to the stars or if it folds tomorrow, success was achieved a long time ago.
