someone WOULD have been a Rakim if Rakim wasn't there. Fact is he WAS there. ERic B is President and My Melody sound TERRIBLY dated in 2009 (even if 90% of emcees have never written something as dope as the "I take seven emcees put 'em in a line" lyrics), but were groundbreaking at the time. Prior to that, nobody brought style and substance to wax like he did, not even Run-DMC. He influence everything that was released from 86-95 on the east coast (and even west coast pioneers like Ice-T and Too Short), all of whom would go on to influence the folks who have released shit over the last ten years.
But thats my whole point. Did he influence people yes, is he a creative and talented MC yes, was he the best and bringing style and substance into music, hmmmm to each his own... Fact still remains is that he was there at the beggining when there was no history to rap, nobody to judge or base what they were hearing to past material. This was a brand new style and genre of music to the world that people caught onto quickly and loved. Of course hes gonna inspire rappers we listen to today because there was noone else around before them to. These guys were the first ones to do it. Which is why I give em mad credit for gettin it goin like I said. Would Rap be where it is today if Rakim wasnt apart of the beggining? ABSOFUCKINLUTELY. There was no ONE man that made rap or kept it going by himself. You could pick out almost any 1 MC from that era that was big and take him out of the equation and shit would of kept on pushin just like it always does...

All Im sayin is, is to put him on a "legend" status or say he is GOD is just rediculous. Yes he did alot for the game and I know he brought alot of attention to hip hop, but just because you inspire someone to do what your doing doesnt make you a legend. Look at the status as of today... Lil Wayne is going to be called a GOD of rap 20 yrs from now by most rap fans... Think about that... and Im sure he has inspired all kinds of kids to be rappers...

Any of you see Tech discussed elsewhere?

Last time I posted about Tech over there (freedomlost) it was like 3 pro tech 7 against. That's been quite awhile ago though, before it became projectetc...

What's the overall consensus like now?

How are you going to agree that he influenced many rappers and whatnot today, and then say Rap would still be exactly the same, had he never rapped.
Never did I say that rap would of been the exact same. I said that rap would still be where it is today meaning it still would of became mainstream and would of still pretty much dominated culture as we see it today...Rap would of continued its progression had Rakim never been apart of it... Him inspiring people didnt change the course of hip hop IMO... Thats what I said.

Theezy...

by the same logic there are and will not ever be any rap "legends", because there will always be somebody else who would have come along to impact the game had the other not done it before him/her.

should we also scrap the rock and roll hall of fame, the baseball hall of fame, etc.?
