That's a big part of the problem... Pads are lighter, helmets are gettin' better... So the hits gets bigger... Bet fools WEREN'T gettin laid out like they do now with those 'leather' numbers Newt Rockne used to wear...
That's true, but back when Rockne played, you didn't have 6'7" 360 pound players who could run a 4.3 forty yard dash coming at you. Pads are needed for protection. It's a double edged sword. The best thing you can do is make sure the pads are as safe as humanly possible without fucking up the product on the field.

I just wish people were more aware of how bad a concussion can really be. When James Harrison says some shit like "basically he fell asleep for a little while and then he woke back up and he was OK", he shows a complete lack of knowledge about the long term effects of multiple concussions. If people knew, they'd be able to make better decisions about whether they wanted to take that risk or not.

what's funny is Rugby players don't have as bad or as frequent of injuries and they don't even have helmets. They learn how to position their head when they get hit or hit someone. When you add pads, equipment and a helmet, you essentially become a weapon and harder hits occur.

Anyways, like I was saying the NFL is so damn reactionary. Any time something happens, like a bad injury or several injuries, or a star player goes down (TOM BRADY!) they immediately try to INVENT a new rule that will supposedly prevent it.

But it wont, it's a full contact sport. They need to accept the fact injuries are and always will be apart of the game. You can't stop that unless you make it flag football.

I mean in boxing fools get knocked out, get brain damage or flat out die. What are they going to do, make rules so that you cant hit someone in the face too hard? Of course not, it's part of the sport. With the good comes the bad and sometimes tragic. That's part of the appeal, the NFL is America's modern day Gladiators. People want violence.

yup it's all in the technique, wether they lead with the shoulder or wrap the legs up in rugby/rugby league, positioning the head and neck is taught with the fundamentals at a very early age.

If I felt that there was genuine concern for men that are risking their health for a sport, I'd be more likely to agree. But this is bullshit. Goodell's made this big push towards "player safety" while pushing towards an 18 game season, having teams play Thursday games, and putting teams in every dumb ass throwback uniform imaginable..

He's doing everything he can to milk the sport and the players and knows he needs to dilute the sport to do so. If he can institute rules to limit injuries then players can play longer, generate more revenue and score more easily. The problem is that football is inherently a violent game..

Basketball was ruined when everything became a foul and defenders can't defend and have to take passive roles. They lost me as a fan and I've completely stopped watching. Hopefully something happens in football or the same thing will happen..

^^exaclty...

its a violent sport so these hits aint gonna stop anytime soon no matter what type of suspensions/fines you put on it....

you can use all the correct technique to tackle in the world but like hasslebeck said on espn you can still have these type of hits if the receiver,to protect himself, positions himself just right in the way of the defensive players helmet to produce a violent hit...
