Ibragimov-Chagaev Off, Ibragimov-Holyfield On!

Sultan Ibragimov: Age 32, recored 21-0-1, 17 KOs

Evander Holyfield: Age 44, record 42-8-2, 27 KOs

HOLLYWOOD, FL – After the sudden withdrawal of WBA Heavyweight Champion Ruslan Chagaev from his October 13th unification bout with WBO Heavyweight Champion Sultan Ibragimov due to undisclosed medical reasons, Seminole Warriors Boxing, Golden Boy Promotions, Main Events and Golden Grain Promotions, in association with Sampson Lewkowicz and Yuri Federov’s Sports Lab, are pleased to announce that stepping up to the plate in an attempt to win the heavyweight championship of the world for a fifth time is Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield.

Ibragimov-Holyfield sponsored by Nafta Moskva, will take place on the original date of Ibragimov-Chagaev, Saturday, October 13, at the state of the art Khodynka Arena in Moscow, Russia. Broadcast plans for the bout will be announced once they are secured.

“When a fighter pulls out of a major fight, it’s always a headache for the other fighter and the promoter, but this time, we have been able to put together another historic bout for fight fans as Evander Holyfield fights in Russia for the first time in his professional career and tries to make history by taking Sultan Ibragimov’s heavyweight title. This will be an unforgettable night,” said Leon Margules, Executive Director of Seminole Warriors Boxing.

Holyfield (42-8-2, 27 KOs), the four-time world heavyweight champion and former undisputed world cruiserweight champion, has already carved out a place for himself in boxing’s Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York with his stellar career, which includes wins over Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Riddick Bowe, Michael Moorer, John Ruiz, and Hasim Rahman. But “The Real Deal” has plenty of fight left, and currently riding an impressive four fight winning streak, Holyfield is eager to once again fight for the world heavyweight crown.

When offered the fight “The Real Deal” did not hesitate and quickly agreed to challenge Ibragimov in his home country.

“This is the first step on my quest to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, and I’m glad Sultan Ibragimov was willing to step up and give me a shot,” said Holyfield. “I’m looking forward to fighting in Moscow for the first time and winning my fifth heavyweight title there.”

A 2000 Olympic Silver medalist for Russia, Sultan Ibragimov (21-0-1, 17 KOs) struck heavyweight Gold in June when he decisively decisioned Shannon Briggs over 12 rounds to win the WBO heavyweight championship. For the fifth southpaw to win the heavyweight crown, it was the culmination of a journey that began in Dagestan and which led him to wins over Al Cole, Lance Whitaker, and Javier Mora. Now, the 32-year old – who can either box or bang between the ropes - will return home to face a boxing icon.

“Of course I’m disappointed that Chagaev pulled out of our fight and won’t allow me to unify our titles, but fighting a legend like Evander Holyfield is even better,” said Ibragimov. “And though I respect what he has done in his career, once the bell rings it will be all business, because he is trying to take what I have worked so hard for – my world championship.”

Today, at the press-center of the ‘ITAR TASS’ agency in Moscow, it was announced by both Sultan Ibragimov and Evander Holyfield that this fight will take place on the originally scheduled date of Saturday, October 13, 2007.

This is pretty wack cuz I was really looking forward to a heavyweight unification bout, but I suppose if Holyfield wins then that will set up a holyfield - klitshko match.

Not wack at all in my opinion because I am a Holyfield fan. This is his last shot at the title and he deserves it. Holyfield will pull of the upset and win the belt!!

I don't doubt that Holyfield cant beat Ibragimov as Ibragimov seems to me as a very average fighter, but I really don't see how this is helping the Heavyweight division. Yes, it will spark some interest if he wins for a little while and he'll be regarded as such a hero and yada yada, but I think this fight is setting the division back by at least a year or two....here's why:

Ibragimov vs Chagaev was a lot more important of a fight than people think. This was to be the first heavyweight Unification bout in many years and was really the first important step towards FINALLY having a Single Unified Heavyweight Champion of the World.

The winner of Ibragimov vs Chagaev would have two belts and almost certainly fight Klitshcko who has another. The winner of that fight would have three belts, with only one belt remaining (the ones that really matter anyways).

By having Ibragimov-Holyfield, it accomplishes nothing. The belts will still be owned by four different people, all claiming to be the heavyweight champion of the world.

The heavyweight division badly needs a unified champion to end this mess and to finally clean up the division and I seriously doubt Holyfield is the man for the job. He may beat Ibragimov, but I don't see him beating Ruslan Chagaev, Klitscko, or even most of the other top 10 ranked HW.

BTW, Holyfield better go for the knock out early because not only does he get tired at age 44 in the later rounds, the fight is in Moscow and there is a small chance in hell the judges will give the win to an American if the fight is close.

Did you catch the Holyfield fight against Saverese? He didn't get tired in the 10th round of that fight and that was his last fight. Before Holyfield knocked out Tyson, Holyfield got knocked out by Bowe. If the real deal shows up which I think he will we're going to see a great fight.

Yeah it's pretty amazing. I am not saying that just because I'm a fan of his but he looked pretty good against Saverese. I though Holyfield was done after he got knocked out by James Toney. But these last fights he didn't look so old or tired like he did James Toney, Bird, and Donald. I didn't watch the Donald fight because I had pretty much though he was done. I think it should be an entertaining fight. This is his last shot at the title so we know he's coming to fight.

I'm pulling for the Real Deal, but for me, the smart (maybe not the correct) choice would be Sultan, so that's who I voted for. Holyfield hasn't really convinced me yet and with a win over a legit Champion, he'll win me over..

I'm really not a fan of ANY of these heavyweight ''stars''...< I cringed as I used that term.

I think the heavyweight division is so pathetic, compared to even 10 years ago, that I don't pay much attention to it anymore.

I've always liked and respected Holyfield, so I'll pull for him on this one.

I just read an article in SI where they interviewed klitshko. He said when he was first introduced with the idea to fight hollyfield, he didnt want to cuz holyfield is too old.. but now that hes beaten a few contenders, he says he'd fight him.

According to a recent report by writer Dan Rafael, Sultan Ibragimov's defense of the WBO heavyweight title against former four-time champ Evander Holyfield is very likely to be televised live on ESPN Classic.
