NorKoastal...where you live folks?
go to Guitar Center...try both these mics out
the AKG 414...and the Blue Baby Bottle...

i can let you hear some shit i've done with the Baby Bottle...raw without EQ Dynamics Compression etc...and at that done in the most poorly acoustic room ever !!! and it still sounds clean

i used an AKG before i went to the Blue Baby Bottle...and it's a huge huge difference

whatever you do tho'...make sure you buy a Kiwi or Champagne XLR chord for your mic...it made the quality sound a lot better suprisingly when i upped to a Kiwi from my run-of-the-mill XLR chord

and i'm sure Kev is talkin about that 414 B...if you can get that for under 600...do so...cus it's a dope mic
but i don't like AKG mics very much

i think they're not that great for catching hi's

I think that 1st and fore most one mic will not do it all. Different people get different results with certain mics and preamp combinations. The Rode NTK is one of the best value's out there period. I've used it a couple of times, seems to work a litte better on people with deeper voices, I liked it way more than the NT2. The AKG 414 is also mic that pops up alot from what I hear and what I read on alot of Pro Audio boards. I own and use an Audio Technica 4033, which I love but it's a little on the high side, and not warm, but works great for most folks that I put in front of it.

What price range are you looking at?????????????? Also spending $1500 on a preamp ain't gonna do much if your A/D converters are average or sub par.

There is 80 million microphones and Pre amps out there you dont always have to go with brands you've heard to get the best results. Most of the stuff I want you'll never find at GC.
