M-1Global Press Conference held thrusday

On Thursday M-1 Global held a press-conference on the upcoming Strikeforce / M-1 Global event in Chicago where Fedor Emelianenko will square off against Brett Rogers. Present were M-1 president Vadim Finkelstein, M-1 vice-president Sergey Matvienko, Fedor Emelianenko and hios coaches Alexander Michkov and Vladimir Voronov.

The panel answered questions from Russian and International Media, listed below are highlights:

Q: Fedor, you had two exhibition matches in the past. Why are you so interested in doing that?

Fedor Emelianenko: I believe that in the course of a fight you are not always able to fully showcase your skills and technique. During an exhibition match it’s easier to demonstrate some interesting moves like say high throws.

Vadim Finkelstein: On December, 3 Fedor will spar on the ring again for the audience that will come for the M-1 Selection and Challenge Finals. Then Fedor plans to have a rest in his home town.

Q: Fedor , you got married in church in October. Has it in any way influenced your preparation for the upcoming Strikeforce / M-1’s fight?

Fedor Emelianenko: I’m happy that I did it. I’d been waiting so long for that. It brings joy to my heart. And I can’t imagine how that could have had an impact on my preparation.

Q: Will the M-1 Selection and M-1 Challenge Finals be broadcast live on TV?

Vadim Finkelstein: The M-1 Challenge Finals will definitely be live on the major Russian RTR Sport channel. In the meantime we are in negotiations with Eurosport about having the 2010 Challenge tournament series broadcast there.

Q: Fedor, it’s going to be your first time in cage. How have you been preparing for that?

Fedor Emelianenko: We assembled a cage in our gym. I worked a lot on being pressed into the cage with my back. I can say there is not much of a difference between cage and ring. The main point is to feel the distance inside and it has not much to do with dimension of space you operate in.
Question for Alexander Michkov:

Q: Did you invite any specific athletes to help Fedor prepare for Rogers?

Alexander Michkov: Fedor feels more comfortable when sparring with the people he knows well. To give you an example, we had his brother Alexander asking to train with us this summer. He damaged Fedor’s bridge of the nose while sparring.

Q: Have you ever been seriously injured and how would you recover?
Fedor Emelianenko: It’s all about the right way of executing any move. It helps you stay healthy. I’m grateful to my trainers who taught me that.

Vladimir Voronov: I think the working ethic is very important. If an athlete starts relaxing and not strictly following what trainer says and tries to do things on his own he might end up injured. As for Fedor, he’ll always do what’s planned and sometimes even more but you’ll never see him break the rules of the training camp.

Q: Fedor, did you think of retiring and if so, when?
Fedor Emelianenko: My current contract is for 3 fights. When I was signing it I had though a lot about that. We’ll see what the future brings to the table.

Question for Vadim:
Will the style of M-1 Selection Russia change in 2010?

Vadim Finkelstein: Basically, the main goal behind the Selection series was to reveal the best fighters from Russia. However we hade more than 50 athletes competing, some of them fought just once or twice and at the end if the day it’s difficult to see who’s the best. That’s why we are adjusting the sytem and starting from the next year it’d going to be a tournament held according to the Olympic system where the loser goes home instantly. We’ll have 8 fighters in each weight category and they’ll compete at several events with the finals pitting two finalists against each other. The winners will form a team of 5 to present Russia in M-1 Challenge 2010.

Emelianenko, Rogers headed to Chicago Bears game, set to appear on CBS' Halftime Show

Critics of Strikeforce and CBS' pre-fight build-up to the Nov. 7 event, "Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers," have questioned aloud why the network hasn't heavily utilized its NFL programming as a platform for advertisement.

That concern will be addressed on Sunday.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned from sources close to the organization that main-event fighters Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers are set to appear at Sunday's Chicago Bears vs. Cleveland Browns game at Soldier Field in Chicago. The pair will also be interviewed on the CBS Football Halftime Show.

Emelianenko and Rogers meet on Nov. 7 at Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., a suburb of Chicago.

Additional sources close to the network indicated that the dual appearance will kick off a late flurry of marketing efforts to complement the advertising that is already in place.

In addition to the halftime show appearance, Emelianenko and Rogers will also be featured in the upcoming preview show, "FIGHT CAMP 360: Fedor vs. Rogers," which debuts on Showtime on Nov. 3.

"Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers," which is co-presented by M-1 Global, kicks off a multi-event deal between Strikeforce and CBS and puts MMA on major U.S. network television for the first time since EliteXC's short-lived run in 2008.

^^ they didn't interview them. Showed a couple quick spots during commercials and showed Rogers in a skybox for a couple secs during the game.

Conference Call notes-

Strikeforce had a media conference call earlier this morning with Strikeforce President Scott Coker, Brett Rogers, and Fedor Emelianenko to promote their November 7 show.

Coker: "If Fedor was living in America, we would take him on a lot more shows." Has no interest in Fedor's brother, Alex, because he has issues with the sports commissions right now and is not cleared to fight.
Expects the show to be fully sold out by Saturday. They are 85% sold out right now.

Rogers: Does not think Fedor is underestimating him even though he got married recently and doesn't think Fedor is taking him lightly at all.
Has studied tape of Fedor to prepare for the fight. Has trained for three months for Fedor and feels like he knows him. He is waiting for Fedor to try to take him down and he does not think Fedor will want to stand up with him for very long.
"I am coming into the fight as the bigger, stronger guy."
"I don't work at Sam's Club anymore." "I am getting movie and TV offers."
Was supposed to be on MTV's Bully Beatdown show but he didn't have time.
"I always wanted to do this. This is my life."
Feels underrated because he is a big underdog. He hopes for more respect after the fight. Expects a quick finish to the fight.
Does a lot of mediation before the fight. "The day of the fight is nothing. I sleep up to the point of the fight."
"I am hoping the fans cheer me on too since I am actually from Chicago. I have a lot of friends coming from Minnesota to cheer me on."

Fedor: Says he gets nervous one day before the fight because he is a human being. He found the NFL game yesterday in Chicago to be interesting but the games on TV are more exciting. "I don't think I would have enough energy to play and I don't know the rules very well."
Expects the fans to cheer Rogers since he is from Chicago. He has experienced fights where the fans have cheered his opponents more than him.
Does not train with any American fighters. He just works with his coaches.
"I really like having fights in America."

BRETT ROGERS REALIZING HIS DREAM

Trainer Mike Reilly has seen a lot of fighters come and go through his garage, but Brett Rogers really made an impression.

When Rogers stepped into the five-car garage Reilly converted into an MMA gym, he was hard to miss at six-feet-five-inches and 280 pounds. But more than that, he lacked the big-guy arrogance of other men his size.

“When he came to do this, his primary thing was, ‘I’ve got a wife and three kids,’” Reilly told MMAWeekly.com. “I’ve gotta provide for my family.”

Rogers was stuck in a split-shift job at Sam’s Club working 40 to 50 hours a week, barely covering his expenses. He grew up in the Cabrini-Green projects in Chicago, had heavy hands, and never backed down from a fight, but that wasn’t putting food on his table. His talents needed shaping.

“When he first started, he couldn’t afford to train most places,” said Reilly.

So Reilly took Rogers under his wing, nurturing the fighter’s existing gifts and working to develop a solid ground game, which would surely be needed if he ever wanted to become known. There was a struggle to get Rogers in the groove of a professional fighter.

“I’d be saying, you gotta train more, and he’d be like, ‘I’ve gotta work more,’” said Reilly. “It became a real focus for me to help him to where he could do this and make a life.”

After his fourth straight victory, Rogers began getting offers from bigger organizations, including the UFC. Reilly, however, wanted to take it slow.

“He would have had a good shot at getting in the UFC or on ‘The Ultimate Fighter,’” said Reilly. “But he wouldn’t have been ready.”

Instead, Rogers signed with EliteXC and racked up another three stoppage victories against Ralph Kelly, James Thompson (where he was a 3-to-1 underdog), and Jon Murphy. As expected, Rogers made an impression with his ferocious style and Mohawk.

But Rogers got put on the shelf after calling out Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson at the post-fight press conference for EliteXC’s CBS network debut, and it was back to Sam’s Club. He sat out for almost a year.

Things turned around when Strikeforce acquired his EliteXC contract and put him to work in April, where he quickly knocked out Ron “Abongo” Humphrey. Then there was the 22-second knockout of Andrei Arlovski, which cemented Rogers as a legitimate threat in the heavyweight division.

Fans and pundits thought Rogers could really be something – if the ground game he shirked in competition was sound enough to keep wrestling-based heavies at bay.

On Saturday, Rogers faces the Mount Everest of MMA feats – a fight with Fedor Emelianenko in the main event of Strikeforce’s CBS network debut.

Most believe the fight is far from competitive if Emelianenko gets Rogers to the ground. Not surprisingly, Reilly disagrees.

“People don’t realize, when he gets on the ground, he gets up,” said Reilly. “But if he stays on the ground, he has a lot of tricks and submissions.”

Reilly joked about Rogers tearing through his training partners in preparation for the fight, though he clarifies that Rogers has control when he needs it. If someone pushes him in the gym, though, Rogers won’t back down. Or more specifically, he won’t let them get back up.

When it comes to the ground wizardry of Fedor, Reilly says Rogers' size will be a major asset in the fight.

“His suplex – nobody has ever seen it in a fight – is insane,” he said. You’re 10 feet in the air. When he suplexes you, it’s for real; you should pack a parachute.”

Rogers has promised to pressure Emelianenko like few have done before, and Reilly has taken him to several different gyms for perspective on climbing the mountain, including sessions with the Russian’s friend and would-be opponent, Josh Barnett.

Whatever happens on Saturday, Reilly maintains his commitment to giving Rogers his dream.

“This is what he wants to do for a living,” said Reilly. “He wants to train, and be a professional athlete, and make a living. So how do we make that happen?”

Strikeforce: Emelianenko vs. Rogers Close to Sellout

The big measure of success for Saturday night's fight between Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers is whether it will draw good enough ratings on CBS to give Strikeforce a future on network television. But another important test is whether Strikeforce can go into a new market -- Chicago -- and sell out an arena.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker says Saturday night's show has already sold about 85% of the 12,000 tickets available, and he expects a sellout. That would be an impressive accomplishment, as Chicago has never been a great market for MMA: Both the UFC and WEC were disappointed by the rate of ticket sales when they came to the Windy City.

A friend of mine who's thinking of going to the event on Saturday night told me that when he searched Ticketmaster, he found floor seats available at $500 a pop, and some pretty good seats above the floor at $75 each. The cheapest seats, priced at $35 and $50, were not available on Ticketmaster. Seats appear to have sold out well enough that large blocks are no longer available: My friend checked to see if he could get 20 together in the $150 price range and couldn't. At StubHub, tickets are available at anywhere from $60 to $1,500, and you can get as many as six together.

With four days to go before the event, it looks to me like there are enough seats available that it's probably not going to sell out. But it's going to be pretty close, and maybe if there's a late surge of publicity for the fight, they could fill the house. Overall it seems like a pretty good showing at the gate for Strikeforce.

Strikeforce headliner Brett Rogers on NBC's "Last Call with Carson Daly" tonight

Brett Rogers, who headlines Saturday's CBS-televised Strikeforce/M-1 event at the Sears Centre in Chicago, appears as a guest on tonight's new edition of "Last Call with Carson Daly" on NBC.

Rogers joins author Neil Strauss and the band Peaches on the show, which begins late Friday/early Saturday at 1:35 a.m. ET/PT.

Rogers will discuss his upcoming CBS-televised headline fight with Fedor Emelianenko, which takes place at the Sear Centre near Chicago.

Rogers, who grew up in the projects of Chicago and recently bought his family a home in Minnesota, will discuss how his newfound MMA fame allowed him to quit his job as a tire service man at Sam Club's to train fulltime and hopefully improve his upon his perfect 10-0 record (with 10 first-round stoppages).

"Last Call with Carson Daly," a 30-minute late-night talk show, debuted in January 2002 and is currently in its ninth season. In addition to actors, athletes and other notables, the show is perhaps best known for a steady lineup of musical guests. Daly is a former MTV VJ and longtime host of "Total Request Live."

FOR BRETT ROGERS, IT'S ALL ABOUT RESPECT

Brett Rogers has had his mind set to Fedor Emelianenko from Affliction’s final moments to Strikeforce’s biggest moment.

The two will clash under the CBS eye Saturday night for a possible sold-out house at the Sears Centre Arena in suburban Chicago. It’s the fourth time in mixed martial arts’ short history that the sport will be seen on over-the-air network TV.

Rogers, 28, is only three years into a professional mixed martial arts career and six months into life as a full-time fighter. He’s faced only one Top 10 fighter, though he's undefeated at 10-0. It’s an easy drawback for handicappers (Rogers is +375 to Emelianenko’s -550).

But for Rogers, a guy who grew up about 35 miles away from the arena in the Cabrini Green projects, it’s just a challenge that could to put distance between his family and hardship.

“Coming from nothing and wanting to be something,” he said. “This is my life.”

If you look at his early career, Rogers has faced a lot of heavy guys who swung wide and moved forward. His heavy hands dispatched them all. None of them, however, came close to the explosive power and submission wizardry that Emelianenko possesses.

What’s more, the eye doesn’t measure speed the same way between watching a fight and actually being in a fight. One of Emelianenko's previous opponents, former UFC champion Tim Sylvia, was flabbergasted by the difference between the two after succumbing to the Russian's strikes in 36 seconds.

So for all the tape Rogers has seen, he’ll experience the true speed of “The Last Emperor” for the first time Saturday night.

Still, the former Sam’s Club employee feels like he knows Emelianenko. He’s put in three months of hard training. Last month, he traveled west with trainer Mike Reilly to see how he measured up to some of Southern California’s best fighters, including Josh Barnett, Emelianenko’s would-be opponent in August. He worked his ground game. When he left, he had a new appreciation of technique and endurance. If both were sound, he thought, he would hold up well.

He’s fully expecting Emelianenko to take him down where armbars await.

“His submissions are definitely his A-game,” he said.

But if he can bully the almost-undefeated heavyweight before that ball ever gets rolling, he’s halfway there. Just look at Andrei Arlovski’s January performance, he says, pre-flying knee.

“Andrei predominantly got in Fedor’s head,” said Rogers. “He was pressing him and kept him on his heels. When you’re going against somebody who’s not so much of a striker, that’s what you want them doing, just constantly backing up.”

Backing up, he notes, into the cage, a new territory for the top ranked fighter. The ropes that Emelianenko worked with his whole career will not be there for him.

“I’m going to use that to my advantage and lock it up,” said Rogers.

If the fight spills to the ground, he says, he deserved it.

Rogers expected to be the big underdog in the fight, though he expects the Chicago crowd to be split 50/50 between the two of them. Afterwards, he hopes the lines will look more favorably upon him.

“Hopefully I gather more respect,” he said.

Whatever happens on Saturday, Rogers expects it to be over quick.

Wedding Bells and Brett Rogers for Fedor

Even his own wedding a month ago did little to slow down Fedor Emelianenko's steadfast preparation for his bout against undefeated Brett Rogers at Strikeforce/M-1 Global's "Fedor vs. Rogers" this Saturday on CBS.

"The Last Emperor" broaches the bliss of marriage and what he picked up during his brief staredown with Rogers at a pre-fight press conference held Thursday in Chicago.
