CAN CBS BRING FEDOR TO THE MASSES?

The new CBS commercial featuring Fedor Emelianenko drew a mixed reaction from the MMA faithful this week – a slick product, yes, but late in the game.

The 33-year-old Emelianenko, who faces heavyweight hopeful Brett Rogers Nov. 7 at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers on CBS, has been the people’s champion for legions of fans who live and breathe the sport.

Most of them, however, know that those outside their circle will spell success or failure for the network event.

CBS had some of both when they promoted three MMA cards last year under the banner of the now-defunct EliteXC. The first and last events, bolstered by Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano, were unqualified ratings triumphs. The second, void of fighters with crossover appeal, drew poorly.

Advertising for the Strikeforce event began a little over a month ago, leading many to question the network’s commitment to the promotion, and by proxy, the sport.

CBS Senior Executive Vice President Kelly Kahl said his network will put its best foot forward in the buildup to Nov. 7, but asked the faithful to help CBS hit a home run.

“MMA fans seem to seek a greater acceptance, and nothing helps better than calling your friends and saying ‘you’ve got to check this out,’” he said.

The network ran several 10-second spots for the event during the past two weekends of NFL coverage, the first salvo in what Kahl said was the start of a comprehensive campaign. He said the network was assembling footage for new promotional spots and said the volume – and scope – of advertising would be increasing shortly, expanding to cable, radio, and the web.

The NFL ads, he said, were “pretty valuable.”

“We do this for most of our shows,” he said. “You tease a little, and add information and length and frequency as you get closer to the event.”

Kahl said future spots would delve deeper into Emelianenko’s legend, and others featuring Rogers and co-headliners Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Jake Shields would air as well.

MMAWeekly.com sources said an in-depth preview show similar to Showtime’s “Fight Camp 360” was also in the works for the Nov. 7 event.

Only so much of Emelianenko’s fighting life is in reach. UFC owners Zuffa, LLC own Emelianenko’s footage from the now-defunct PRIDE, the promotion that made his legend. Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz said Emelianenko’s footage from the shuttered Affliction would be utilized for future spots.

Kahl was aware that many fans were impatient with the advertising campaign and said it was a byproduct of CBS’ regular broadcast schedule.

“That’s really the bread and butter of our business,” he said. “I hope to heck that we can get MMA to where it’s a huge drawing card for CBS, but we’re not quite at that point yet.”

Nevertheless, Kahl said CBS’ advertising sales department was doing “terrific” for the Nov. 7 telecast, scheduled for 9 p.m. EST.

The question now is whether Emelianenko’s rabid fan base qualifies as crossover appeal, and if not, how the network can create enough interest to draw viewers.

As a pay-per-view draw, Emelianenko has never been a star, but stateside, he has never had the marketing muscle of a television network behind him.

Kahl pointed to Kimbo Slice as an example of a star brightened by the CBS eye. Could Emelianenko be the next?

“Even if you’re not a hardcore mixed martial arts fan, you’re still going to get a lot of excitement watching (Emelianenko) do his thing in the cage,” said Kahl. “It’s a big task, but we’re up to it.”

Showtime to Air Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers 'Fight Camp 360' Special

Despite the fact that the Brett Rogers vs. Fedor Emelianenko fight will not be airing on Showtime, the premium cable network obviously still has a lot invested in the heavyweight bout, and it is putting it's promotional muscle behind it.

On this week's edition of The MMA Hour, which will be presented later this week at MMA FanHouse, Rogers mentioned that an episode of Showtime's new Fight Camp 360 series is being produced about the fight, and it will air around a week before the CBS telecast on Nov. 7. When contacted by FanHouse, Showtime officials would only say that an announcement regarding the show's air date would be coming soon.

After some questioned the promotion -- or lack thereof -- for this fight last month, including FanHouse's Michael David Smith, it seems as though CBS and Showtime are picking up the pace. CBS has begun airing commercials for the fight during football games and they recently released a one-minute promo hyping Emelianenko's debut on the network.

Sure, more can be done. For example, it would be nice to learn more about Rogers, Strikeforce and the other fights on the card, but hopefully that will happen in the next few weeks.

In the meantime, the news that a special preview show will air on Showtime has to be seen as a positive. The first episode of Fight Camp 360, which previewed the first stage of the super middleweight World Boxing Classic, was hailed by many boxing insiders as a solid first effort. And even though this fight isn't airing on Showtime, it will certainly play an important role in the growth of Strikeforce, which airs most of its events on the network.

HBO seemingly revolutionized the way fights are promoted by introducing the combat sports world to it's critically acclaimed 24/7 series two years ago, and the UFC followed suit in January when they produced a three-part Primetime show for UFC 94. So it will be interesting to see how Showtime uses that formula to promote it's upcoming fights, and hopefully future MMA events on the network will receive a similar promotional push.

"FIGHT CAMP 360: Fedor vs. Rogers" special debuts Nov. 3 on Showtime

In anticipation of Strikeforce's Nov. 7 event and its headliner between famed Russian heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko (30-1) and Brett Rogers (10-0), Showtime will debut a preview show, "FIGHT CAMP 360: Fedor vs. Rogers," on Nov. 3.

The special airs at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT, and the CBS Television Network will also make the show available to its 203 affiliated stations for broadcast in advance of the fight.

"Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers," which is co-presented by M-1 Global, kicks off a multi-event deal between Strikeforce and CBS and puts MMA on major U.S. network television for the first time since EliteXC's short-lived run in 2008.

"FIGHT CAMP 360: Fedor vs. Rogers" follows both fighters as they prepare for their upcoming bout, which takes place at the Sears Centre near Chicago.

"Fedor is beyond captivating as a fighter, and more so, as a man," stated director Ron Yassen, who is embedded in Emelianenko's training camp in Stary Oskol, Russia. "It's a pure joy to film him so intimately as he strives for perfection in life and sport with grace and charm. While training for this most important match, he kindly opened up his life to us in and out of the ring, without the ego that often comes with being the very best at one's craft."

The "FIGHT CAMP 360" concept debuted earlier this year and profiled the competitors in Showtime's highly publicized six-man boxing tournament (the Super Six World Boxing Classic), which began this month. The success of that program led Showtime to produce an MMA-geared version for the Emelianenko vs. Rogers fight.

Replays are set for Nov. 3 (10 p.m. ET/PT on SHO2), Nov. 4 (11 p.m. on SHO2), Nov. 5 (10 p.m. on SHO2), Nov. 6 (10 p.m. on SHO2) and Nov. 7 (4:30 p.m. on SHO).

CBS: Fedor Boosts Credibility with Advertisers

Having the world’s No. 1 heavyweight as its centerpiece has been a boon for CBS.

Kelly Kahl, executive vice president for primetime programming, said the addition of Fedor Emelianenko has certainly sweetened the deal in advertiser interest for Strikeforce “Fedor vs. Rogers” on Nov. 7, the network’s first live MMA event telecast in over a year.

“I think (Fedor) made it a lot easier for our sales guys and our sales are going very, very well for this fight,” said Kahl. “To be able walk in with a presentation and show Fedor shows a credibility and it speaks volumes to have a world-class fighter and maybe the best in the world. I think it certainly made it an easier sell than maybe we’ve had in the past.”

Kahl said movies studios, automobile purveyors, and video game companies are among those that have bought commercial slots.

“EA Sports is unveiling a preview of their MMA game in this fight exclusively,” said Kahl. “In terms of getting mainstream sports reporters interested, Fedor gives us the credibility that maybe we didn’t have before. It alerts a lot of people who maybe didn’t know who Kimbo Slice is, but they certainly know who Fedor is.”

Kahl said the network doesn’t have a set number of shows it might produce with Strikeforce (Sherdog reported last February that the deal options out four primetime specials a year with the network), and the network will take a “wait and see’ attitude. Past MMA events on CBS have garnered between 4 and 7 million viewers.

“We’ll go one at a time (and) hopefully see some success on November 7, talk with our partners at Showtime and Strikeforce, then hopefully set up another one,” he said.

Shamrock, CBS Announcers Answer Who Can Beat Fedor

Undefeated heavyweight Brett Rogers will get the next crack at MMA’s top fighter, Fedor Emelianenko, at Strikeforce “Fedor vs. Rogers” on Nov. 7 in Hoffmann Estates, Ill., just outside Chicago.

CBS announcers Frank Shamrock, Mauro Ranallo, and Gus Johnson -- who’ll call the action for the event’s live “Saturday Night Fights” telecast on CBS at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT –- speculated what type of fighter will best the usually unflappable Emelianenko.

Frank Shamrock: The only guy I’ve ever saw hurt Fedor was a big 240-pound Japanese wrestler named (Kazuyuki) Fujita. He got him deceptively. Even though he was a wrestler, he pulled him into a punching game. (Fujita) had planned a strategy counter –- he saw a hole in Fedor’s punching game. I feel (Fedor) didn’t expect that.

I think really somebody with exceptional skill and ability, but with a deceptive or a feinting (strategy) could catch him.

Mauro Ranallo: Even with what Andrei Arlovski was doing in the first couple of minutes of his fight with Fedor, and that’s the key. Fedor is good in all facets of mixed martial arts and one of the keys to his success has been his adaptability on the fly, the ability to take his opponent’s strengths and use them against him.

I think a guy like Brett Rogers –- and again, not wanting to hype more then necessary –- but he does have the knockout power, the punching power. I think he needs to aggressively pursue Fedor, but also use his head –- almost like what (Mauricio) “Shogun” Rua did to (Lyoto) Machida over the weekend, in that you need to be patient. I know it’s an oxymoron, but it’s gotta be patient aggression.

I think the key is to wait for Fedor to make a mistake because everyone does in a fight. Nobody’s perfect. And like Frank said, if you can exploit those rare occurrences where he gives you an opportunity to slip in and land some strikes, because I think that’s the key. I don’t see Brett Rogers winning this fight if it goes to the ground. He really needs to push the pace and really wear down Fedor Emelianenko and I think his size may prove to be key if he is patient.

Gus Johnson: I think what Brett Rogers provides more than all the fights that I’ve seen with Fedor, and I had a chance to watch a lot of his fights last week, (including) the Fujita fight, and Fujita hit him with a fluky punch on the side of the head. I think Brett Rogers is the kind of fighter that not only is he big, he has feline quickness and he’s a big puncher with both hands. Also, I think his muay Thai skills, as we saw in the “Abongo” (Ron Humphrey) fight, is starting to improve. Word out of his camp is he’s out in California rolling with some guys, Josh Barnett (is) one of the guys he’s working with. He’s trying to work on trying to have his body be flexible enough if he gets caught in a heelhook or an ankle lock or if he’s in Fedor’s guard, his goal is to be able to just stand up because he does want to fight Fedor on his fight.

I think Brett Rogers is the kind of guy… he’s in his prime, his confidence is high, and his hunger level is incredible. He understands that if he beats Fedor, he stands in line to make a whole lot of money and change the lives of his family. Fighting outside of Chicago, which is his hometown, is going to be a great motivator for him and I think Brett Rogers is the kind of guy that can beat Fedor.

Rogers’ Trainer: Fedor In for a ‘Shock’

Brett Rogers’ rise from blue-collar worker to heavyweight prospect will be one focus of the Showtime 30-minute documentary preview show “Fight Camp 360°,” which premieres Nov. 3 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on Showtime.

Rogers meets the world’s top-ranked heavyweight, Fedor Emelianenko, at Strikeforce “Fedor vs. Rogers” on Nov. 7 at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill., outside Chicago.

“It’s been fun to share my story,” said Rogers in a release. “I feel that I am living the American success story. And I hope that others can take some level of inspiration from it.”

Rogers, a father of four, left his full-time job earlier this year as a tire technician for Sam’s Club in Minnesota to commit himself to the sport. The 28-year-old, undefeated striker said he’s had to grow accustomed to the added attention.

“The first few days the crew was here, it was a bit suffocating,” said Rogers. “To have them shadow me through my every move, not just in training, but at home with my family, during meals, everywhere. After a few days, though, I kind of got used to it.”

Mike Reilly, Rogers trainer, believes his fighter will surprise many with his improved game.

“We have new wrinkles in training, new sparring partners and sessions,” said Reilly. “With his striking in top form, I can have Brett focus on other facets of the game: grappling, submission defense, throws and kicks. We are coming in from new angles, we found a new range. We have taken conditioning to a new level. Fedor is in for a shock.”

If Fedor loses to Rogers I wonder if he would be more inclined to fight the competition in the UFC to prove himself. Sure if he keeps on beating ass outside of the UFC there will always be the "what if" but if he loses, then maybe a lot of the attention would be shifted off of him.

it's weird thinking about what happens if he loses. No other fighter has as much riding on their fights as he does, and he's proved about as much as anyone could. Look at the p4p list, GSP lost in one of the biggest upsets ever to Serra, Anderson has 3 legit losses, Lyoto arguably just lost, BJ lost this year... It's like the world would implode if and when Fedor ever loses.
And if he beats Rogers he's probably going to be fighting Overeem for the title in March or April, and depending on what Overeem does in the K1 tourney that could be the biggest fight of his career.
