this is an extremely interesting topic... because Ive grown up all my life in michigan. Ive been in some of the roughest ghettos of Detroit, Lived on one of the worst blocks in Saginaw (a.k.a Sagnasty) for a year or so, and been through Flint enough to know how it relates to other Michigan slums. How's Pontiac rate on that list by the way?
Im a white guy, yes... and I find it extremely unfortunate that the politics in this state keep the same hoods poor while they dump millions into Downtown Detroit (brand new Ford field for the worst NFL team in the past fuckin Decade... Comerica Park for the Tigers?!?! wtf? and all the money they put into the renevation of the downtown area and CASINOS to bring tourism to Detroit, but if a tourist rides 10 miles west on 696, 10 miles east on I-94, or even about 20 miles north on I-75 they end up in a place that puts fear into their bones...)
What everyone here also needs to take into consideration is the population density/ratio when it comes to crime rates... sure, you might live in a crazy hood of (your town here), but it doesnt mean your city is dying as much as the next guys. Shit, you could be the modern day jack the ripper in buttfuck Texas (no disrespect Texans), but it dont mean that your town is the craziest.
Big props to the moderator dude who came up with all these analysis, Ive never really posted out of the Strange Music forums but now that I came to the Midwest area I realize that theres actually some intellectual debating going on in other places of the siccness.

The histories of the Midwest and the West Coast are so different that maybe this isn't even a fair comparison. If them West Coast cities had thousands of black people (who weren't arriving with much b/c they were denied in down South) arriving a DAY like a lot of them Midwest cities did in the 1920s, then maybe it'd be a fair comparison. Only West Coast cities with "midwest size" Afro-American populations are Compton, Oakland & Richmond. I don't mean to keep bringing race up and am not trying to sound racist or whatever, but I just don't expect folks from a poor all-black neighborhood to respect a West Coast neighborhood that's economically a lot better off, a lot more racially integrated etc etc etc.
And if the weather has got anything at all to do with this then, LOL, don't even talk about it.
