There was a stoner rock documentary I saw a few years ago that was interesting and talked about the genre and its beginnings. I think it was called desert rock or some shit like that.

Bumptastic!

I need more sludge/stoner recommendations...

Or did we just about cover everyone worth listening to?

Also thanks for the recommendations Little Daz. I liked like 90% of those bands you listed even though I already knew about a few of them.

Cannibis Corpse might not be Sludge but that band cracks me up.

None of those were really Sludge but there were a few bands I never heard of that I will check out seeing you named them anyways. Thanks.

Anyone? There has to be more bands then that is listed here and that I know about already.

This thread was inspired by how much Giant's album "Song" and Electric Wizard's album "Dopethrone" fit my cold, cloudy, rainy bus ride to work today in Seattle. This kind of music was taylor made for this kind of weather and Seattle's overall vibe on these winter days.

Hey Smurf I was checking out Poo On A Stik's myspace page and it looks like they (he, whatever) went sludge for the new album "Poonogomy." Right now it's only rough cuts up but they are decent I'd say. What's your thoughts on this? I loved Greatest Shits so this a big change from one (grindcore) to the other.

I also never new that it was one guy who did all the music. That's pretty fucking badass.

Also is it just me or does it seem like a lot of the grindcore (or atleast grindcore influenced) bands are starting to use some sludge elements at breakdowns or throwing in a sludge song here and there on their albums.

so what's the diff between grindcore and sludge?
HUGE difference, like almost polar opposites. I don't feel like typing it out so from wiki...

Sludge:
Sludge metal combines the low-tempos, heavy rhythms and dark atmosphere of doom metal with the shouted vocal delivery and high-tempos of hardcore punk. This fusion of a "slow" musical genre with a "fast" musical genre produces songs with contrasting tempos.

The string instruments (electric guitar and bass guitar) are heavily distorted and often use a high level of audio feedback to produce a sludgy sound. Often, guitar solos are not present, although this is not always the case. Drumming bears similarities to the style of drumming present in hardcore punk, although the beats may be slowed considerably. The tempo usually falls somewhere between 50 and 80 beats per minute (bpm). Vocals are usually shouted as in hardcore, and lyrics are generally blue-collar in nature; reflecting on society, generally in a depressive, cynical or downtrodden manner
Grindcore:
Grindcore is characterized by: heavily distorted, down-tuned guitars, with crust punk-influenced riffing; hardcore punk and thrash metal drumming, with many bands focusing on blast beats; songs rarely lasting more than two minutes and often seconds long; vocals which consist of growls and higher-pitched screams, similar to those found in black metal or hardcore punk. Lyrical concepts range from social and political issues to gore and humor
In otherwords. Sludge - usually slow paced and heavy. Grind - usually very fast paced and loud.

Here are two bands to compare:

Sludge - Giant (click here)

Grind - Discordance Axis (click here)
