Sharks trade 2011 pick to Atlanta for Eager
The Sharks added a little size and muscle to their lineup on Tuesday.
Forward Ben Eager, 26, was acquired by the Sharks from the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for a fifth round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Known more for his muscle than his scoring prowess, Eager has three goals and seven assists for 10 points and a team-leading 77 penalty minutes in 34 games with Atlanta this season.
A 6-2, 235-pound left wing, Eager should be familiar to Sharks fans. He was a member of the Chicago Blackhawks for three seasons, including last year’s Stanley Cup champion squad, before an offseason trade to Atlanta. In 289 career games with Atlanta, Chicago and Philadelphia, Eager has 30 goals and 32 assists for 62 points and 698 penalty minutes.
Recently, Eager made headlines for earning a match penalty and subsequent four-game suspension for sucker punching Toronto’s Colby Armstrong during a 9-3 Thrashers loss on Jan. 7. He served the final game of the suspension on Monday.
Eager is a former teammate of both Sharks goalies, having played with Antti Niemi last season in Chicago and Antero Niittymaki in Philadelphia.
In another roster move, San Jose claimed Kyle Wellwood off of waivers. As per NHL rules, the 27-year-old forward had to be put on waivers after signing a one-year deal with St. Louis on Monday, giving the Sharks the opportunity to claim him.
Wellwood became an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the 2009-10 season when the Vancouver Canucks opted not to resign him. He spent training camp with the Phoenix Coyotes before getting released, and most recently played in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League.
In 75 games with the Canucks last season, Wellwood tallied 14 goals and 11 assists for 25 points. In 338 career games with Vancouver and Toronto, he has 63 goals and 97 assists for 160 points and 30 penalty minutes.
