The ‘Drug Provision’ of the Higher Education Act is possibly the
right wing's worst direct assault on America's students. It’s an
amendment to the Higher Education Act that strips all federal
education assistance, (including all loans and all work-study funds)
from any student with any drug-related conviction. This includes
non-violent, first-time misdemeanor marijuana possession, which is
the most common drug conviction in America.

To date, the ‘Drug Provision’ has denied 153,000 students an
affordable college education, and deterred countless thousands more
from even applying. And now the Bush administration has chosen to
vigorously expand enforcement, ensuring many more will be locked out
of a better, more productive life.

Our education is being sacrificed to score points for a conservative
agenda because they don’t think students have the power to fight
back. This is our chance to prove them wrong:

Together with the NAACP and the ACLU, Click Back America is committed
to getting the ‘Drug Provision’ repealed. Because the Higher
Education Act is up for renewal, the next few weeks are the best
chance we’ve had in five years to get Congress to take action on this
issue.

This is more than a petition, it’s a campaign. We’ll deliver your
signatures to the most critical members of Congress. As the issue
unfolds, we’ll stay in touch and let you know when your specific
representatives need to hear from you directly, and what else you can
do to help.

Here are just a few of the reasons to oppose the ‘Drug Provision’:

1) It slams the door on students struggling to use education to build
a better life. That increases the likelihood of repeat offenses and
more serious crimes.

2) All students covered by the “drug provision” have already been
punished by a judge who had the option of withholding educational
assistance. That means the “drug provision” only actually affects
students in cases where judges have decided NOT to cut these funds,
usurping the role of the courts and virtually guarantees that the law
is only applied in cases where it is NOT appropriate.

3) It primarily hurts the poor - wealthier students are less likely
to be convicted of drug offenses, and can attend college even without
the federal aid if necessary.

4) Drug convictions fall disproportionately on racial minorities, and
this law transfers that well documented discrimination into
educational access and the chance for a better future.

5) The ‘Drug Provision’ has resulted in absolutely no measurable
reduction in drug use among any segment of the population.

So far, hundreds of thousands of students have been denied an
education so that the Bush administration can score political points
with their conservative base. It’s time we took our future back.

Please sign the petition, and pass it on.

Carlton Banks, I mean Tadou, watch your mouth and who you call an idiot, I ain't playin' and I don't issue threats. Real chop.

And yes, this proposal does deny the opportunity for higher education (i.e. college) to convicted drug offenders, by cutting off federal financial aid...

(now here's where we get a smart ass remark w/ Tadou showering us w/ a wealth of his infinte egotisical "superior" intellegence).

No offense dog, but you ain't the truth! Stay in the backwoods w/ your sheltered rural roots! If you was the truth and from the city and been in the streets, you may actually have a clue! Stick to your storytale raps about thermo-nuclear nuetrons from the ozarks in latin and spanish or what ever you do...

Ok, seriously. I fucked up by making a joke right off the bat. I'm done with that. Seriously though, this Drug Provision’ is crazy. How do you expect to rehabilitate a criminal or drug user if the government takes away all of their rights? It’s completely obvious that this will only hurt society. Aren't there around 750,000 Marijuana offenders a year? Add everything else and we have millions of people who will not be able to go to college.

Yeah, but they shouldn’t be penalized for the rest of their lives. How many teenagers smoke weed, drink etc? The mentality I had when I was 18 was completely different then the way I am now. For the rest of my life I have to live with a minor mistake I made right when I got of high school, which took away many of my rights.

That shit is gay ass fucc. Don't they take away their right to vote also. You can't use federal assistance or exercise your right to vote but you can join the military and risk your life defending this country? I'm curious though, that provision must don't pertain to service members because I'm in the military going to school right now for free and I got a couple drug charges, and I'm a registered voter.

Maybe it's a "benefit" of my service or something, cause before I came in alot of doors of oppurtunity were shut because of lil stupid shit from my past. One of the main reasons I went to the military in the first place.

This is why the crime rate so high. When people get outta jail, they cant get no job or nothin, so they go back to doing the same things they did to get locked up. It's also unfair to not give a person a job or education because of a prior conviction. The person paid their debt to society for their crime. They deserve a second chance. Even if they arent rehabilitated, at least wait until they do some wrong instead of prejudging them.

Contagious...if you are a CONVICTED FELON they take away your right to vote. If you're voting, then you're not a convicted felon or something went wrong within the court system and you should check that out.

If you are a VIOLENT FELON, you serve out your prison sentence, no getting out and going to boot camp and shit like that, because they would have to give you weapons and that's the last thing they want to give to a violent criminal.

If you REGISTERED to vote BEFORE you became a felon, that doesn't mean you can still vote, that just means you were registered to do so before you caught a felony. Like my lady, I believe she registered to vote but she never will because she caught 2 felonies and a strike before the next election, and she was 17 before the last one took place. LOL, like it even matters, she's still gonna be in prison during this upcoming election anyhow.

tadou's right.

everything he's said is correct.

I know several people who have recieved federal aid for college then spent the money on drugs. no joke.
