An argument between two groups of young men near Deer Valley High School in Antioch erupted into gunfire this morning, leaving one teenager wounded and forcing the shutdown of city schools as police hunted for the shooter.
The wounded boy, a junior at the high school, was on his way to the campus in a car with friends when two or three men pulled up next to them in another car, witnesses said. Angry words were exchanged, and the boy was shot at least twice.
The shooting happened at 8:30 a.m. in a quiet neighborhood on Sagebrush Drive, just off the eastern edge of the campus.
The shooter's car sped off, and authorities have made no arrests, police Lt. Leonard Orman said. The shooter is not believed to be a Deer Valley student.
A medical helicopter landed on the school's football field at 8:50 a.m. and took the victim to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.
School officials said the boy had been shot in the chest and right arm. They described his condition as stable.
As a precaution, schools throughout the Antioch Unified School District were placed on lockdown after the shooting. The order was lifted about 10:15 a.m. and classes resumed, but many parents came to take their children home anyway out of concern for their safety.
"You have to be safe when something like this happens," said George Miller, who was picking up his freshman daughter, Trishana Miller. "You can't take a chance with a life."
Throughout the campus, students looked concerned as they came out of their classrooms to go home or to their next class. Few seemed to know the victim well, but many had heard his name and rumors that the shooting was gang-related.
"Everybody's pretty freaked out, worried about what their mamas would think and stuff," sophomore Thomas Douglas said as he headed home with his sister. "I wasn't really scared, though, because I've seen stuff like this before."
Co-Principal Clarence Isadore said officials had not determined if the shooting was related to gang activity, but he believed the shooter was not a student.
"We have ideas about what happened, but we can't talk about that," he said.
