I feel what you're saying Oso.
Regardless of where you're at, you have to do YOU as an artist. If growin' up around the Homeboys is how you were raised, then your music and lifestyle will reflect that. The same goes for artists like myself who grew up ALL OVER, and have various influences. It's all different, but it's all NORTHERN CALI, tu sabes?
The thing that makes it hard for people to relate to us, is the fact that they aren't up on Nor Cal culture as much as the rest of Cali. Once people get a taste of our (Northern Cali Artists) music, they gravitate to it. Our sound is universal. We have artists that give you that Mobb/Gangsta shit, some that lean toward the Hyphy side of things, traditional Hip Hoppers, and artists that stick to the Chicano rap formula.
This is how we are going to grow as artists and as businessmen.....
we need to start cross promoting amongst ourselves. we all have our fan bases, and if we network, put egos aside, and work together, we'll make a louder noise then if we try to do it alone. We have to re-establish ourselves in this game, and stop spending money on getting features from cats that you HOPE will get you some sales. Let's just start putting out QUALITY material, and then they will be coming to US for features.
We all know that the chances of our shit gettin played on the radio is slim to none. Don't even go that route. Make music for the streets, and for the net, and you will see bigger results. It doesn't make any sense for us to keep sending packages to these stations, knowing that they won't play the song if it doesn't contain a feature from an established artist. there are PLENTY of avenues to get your music heard, DON'T LIMIT YOUSELF OR YOUR WAY OF THINKING. Promote in ONLY the markets where sales of your music will be benefitted. In other words, don't spend money trying to get cats back east to cop your stuff. Hit spots like Kansas, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho, Texas, Oklahoma, Washington, Oregon, Minnesota, Illinois, and Indiana. I mean literally GO THERE. They are really open to the Northern Cali sound because they are up on Bay shit. I did a verse for a DJ lOON Mixtape out in KC, and now I have poeple from the Midwest hittin' me up for verses.....that's a wonderful thing.
We can make this thing go y'all, but we gotta stop bullshittin' and MAKE IT HAPPEN.
