Why Is Linebacker Lofa Tatupu Still Unsigned?
How much longer will Lofa Tatupu remain unsigned?
Well, it's hard to tell. The Chicago Bears, who were reported to be interested in Tatupu, believe he is out of their price range.
Another potential suitor, the Washington Redskins, are out of the picture after re-signing Rocky McIntosh.
At 28 years old Tatupu is one of the most talented defensive players on the market. However, he has a few things working against him.
There aren't many teams in the market for a linebacker right now—just ask Matt Roth, another linebacker having trouble finding a job.
For Tatupu, that spells trouble, because no one is going to be willing to spend on him if there's no bidding war. As of now, Tatupu's best chance at landing the kind of contract he desires would probably be with the Oakland Raiders. However, like every other team, the Raiders are in no position to rush the signing of Tatupu or give him a ton of cash.
Another issue with Tatupu is the concern that he has peaked. Tatupu started his NFL career with three straight Pro Bowl appearances, but hasn't gone since 2007. In 2009, Tatupu missed 11 games after tearing a pectoral muscle and had been off to a slow start regardless. In 2010, Tatupu had the worst season of his career.
When you look at those facts, it certainly seems like Tatupu has peaked. For the sake of his career, Tatupu will probably have to end up taking a one-year deal and attempt to prove he can still compete a Pro Bowl-caliber level.
