Carroll: Key this week is right 'mindset' for road
Pete Carroll doesn't care that the Seahawks have won 10 straight games against the St. Louis Rams. What he does care about his that his team didn't play well in its one road game this season, which is the only history he's worried about heading into Sunday's trek to the Midwest.
Carroll didn't like the way his team performed in its 31-14 loss at Denver two weeks ago. He's either unaware or unconcerned that recent Seahawks teams have made a habit of such face plants away from home.
"Half this team is different, so we're starting all over again," Carroll said. "All the approach and principles of going on the road and traveling right now are so paramount to me because I've got to get us all on the same page so we can capitalize on (the fact) we have a way to do this and the way we think our way through it.
"Now we need to execute it. I need to do a must better job than I did last time around. I didn't get it done with the guys. This is so important because half your future is based on getting on the road and being successful. So it's a big step for us."
To Carroll, it's a mental approach to being the same team at home as on the road. He said his defense's lack of pressure on Denver quarterback Kyle Orton had nothing to do with being on the road, but was a function of the circumstances of that particular game.
He doesn't think he did well in getting his team ready to play at Invesco Field and intends to have a better outcome at the Edward Jones Dome this weekend.
"It's a better job of presenting the mindset and taking the preparation with us," he said. "We were not the same team on the road as we were at home. We had two or three turnovers the first game and five this last game (at Qwest). We had zero, we weren't even close to getting the football in Denver.
"That to me was the most glaring issue. What took place that didn't have us on the attack like we normally are on the football? There were some other things as well. So it's just making sure we carry our style wherever we go. That's the idea.
"It doesn't matter where you play or whether you're indoors or outdoors. It's a bigger concept to me than maybe other people, but I've learned over the years it's really important to have your mindset right about taking your game wherever you go.
"There's going to be a time when we're faced with an opportunity to win a division or conference championship and it's not going to be at home. It'll be on the road. You have to play the way you're capable of playing wherever you go. ... If we can get that done with consistency, now you're really hard to beat and we're trying to get to that point."
Injury update: Carroll said defensive starters Marcus Trufant (ankle), Aaron Curry (hamstring) and Brandon Mebane (calf) would all miss practice Wednesday afternoon. He said there status for Sunday's game won be known until later in the week.
Wide receiver Mike Williams is fully recovered from a shoulder issue that hampered him Sunday.
New receiver: Carroll said Williams' health had nothing to do with the signing of veteran receiver Brandon Stokley.
Stokley will fit in immediately as a third-down specialist who already understands Seattle's offense since it's the same one he previously worked in with offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates in Denver two years ago.
"He's a gifted route runner," Carroll said. "He can go out and play the system right now. He gives us another guy we can go to."
Stokley just recovered from a groin injury that wiped out his preseason in Denver. The 34-year-old said Seattle was the first team he tried out with and that he's 100 percent healthy now.
On the line: Russell Okung will practice for the first time in nearly six weeks, but Carroll reiterated that Tyler Polumbus remains the starting left tackle until the rookie is fully ready.
As for the two newcomers signed Tuesday, Breno Giacomoni will be worked at right tackle behind Sean Locklear and veteran Allen Barbre is being viewed as a left-guard candidate, where Ben Hamilton remains the current starter.
Chester Pitts is also expected to practice full-out for the first time this week and he'll also figure into the mix at guard.
