Zach Miller's pay cut ensures Seattle Seahawks return

While they continue to eye the prospect of signing Jermichael Finley, the Seattle Seahawks locked up a familiar face at tight end Saturday.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Zach Miller has agreed to a restructured two-year, incentive-packed contract worth up to $8 million that will keep the tight end in the Pacific Northwest through 2015, according to a source involved in the process. KIRO-AM's Danny O'Neil first reported the signing.

Miller, a valued blocker who played 58 of 60 snaps in the Super Bowl, was a prime target for release with a $5.8 million price tag for 2014. Instead, he'll earn a base of $3 million in each of the next two seasons to remain with a cast of tight ends that includes Luke Willson and Anthony McCoy -- and perhaps Finley.

On this week's "Around the League Podcast," we cited Seattle's interest in Finley as one of the more underrated narratives to emerge during the first phase of free agency. Adding the former Green Bay Packers target would give Russell Wilson a versatile collection of tight ends to work with in an offense that hasn't historically used that position to excess during the quarterback's two-year run with the team.

The Miller signing doesn't suggest to us that talks with Finley have broken down, but only that Miller came around on a much more affordable deal that Pete Carroll and friends were willing to work with.

It's kinda crazy how being on a Superbowl team gets you wanted and paid. I mean think of how many red flags Browner has. Drug suspensions, one more incident and he could be done, his lack of speed, was in the CFL for five years, etc, and despite all that he gets a big contract with the Pats. Even the white guy, can't think of his name, the back up safety who never plays got a nice contract lol.

Seahawks re-sign K Steven Hauschka to three-year deal

A lot can change in a decade. Ten years ago, Steven Hauschka had never played organized football, now he's the Seahawks placekicker of the future. The 28-year-old signed a new deal with the team on Monday that will keep him in Seattle through the 2016 season.

Hauschka's new contract will pay him $9.15 million over the three years and includes $3.35 million in guaranteed money, according to NFL.com. With an average annual salary of $3.05 million, Hauschka is now one of the 12 kickers in the league who have cracked the $3 million annual salary mark.

"We're extremely excited to be able to re-sign Steven, especially after the incredibly successful season that he had," Seahawks general manager John Schneider said in a statement.

That incredibly successful season included two game-winning kicks in overtime and a perfect 8-for-8 showing during Seattle's playoff run. Hauschka went 3-for-3 in the Seahawks 23-15 divisional round playoff win over New Orleans, then followed that up with a 3-for-3 performance in Seattle's 23-17 NFC title game win over San Francisco.

Hauschka's overtime game-winners came iN Week 4 against the Texans and in Week 9 against the Buccaneers. The overtime field goal against Tampa Bay capped a 21-point comeback for Seattle, the largest in franchise history.

Not a bad season for a guy who didn't kick his first football until after his freshman year at Middlebury College.

"I walked on at Middlebury as a sophomore after my roommate told me the football team needed a kicker," Hauschka told the Seahawks official website. "I had to ask the guys on the team how to put the pads on, and how to slip the jersey over the pads. So it's a funny experience to think that I'm here now."
