Seahawk is but one of many nicknames for the awesome Osprey (Pandion haliaetus). This large, long-winged bird of prey cuts a striking figure, dark chocolate brown above and white below with a strong black line through its eye. This color scheme is obviously a bit more understated than the blue, teal, and chartreuse palette favored by the football Seahawks, but seems to work well for the raptor.

Houshmandzadeh: What’s all the fuss?

RENTON, Wash. (AP)—No one in Seattle will ever confuse T.J. Houshmandzadeh(notes) with Steve Largent.

The outspoken Houshmandzadeh is “shocked” with the fuss being made in his first Seahawks season over his angry gestures and comments about not getting the ball enough, in a city where people are used to their star receivers being quiet yet ultra productive—like Largent. Seattle’s Hall of Famer was so understated he wouldn’t even spike the ball following any of his 101 career touchdowns.

Declaring “I like myself, man, I really do,” Houshmandzadeh said Friday he’s been hearing all week from those inside and outside Seahawks headquarters, from former teammates in Cincinnati, even from his two daughters at home.

Last weekend in Dallas, he angrily gestured toward Matt Hasselbeck(notes) to throw the ball with more loft immediately after he tried to zing a ball to the tightly guarded receiver near the Cowboys’ goal line in the first quarter.

The discussion between the two players continued at the bench. Both made gestures but did not appear to be arguing so much as explaining themselves.

Then in the third quarter, Houshmandzadeh was seen angrily shouting on the sidelines following the end of another possession in Seattle’s eventual blowout loss.

The day ended with the NFL’s leading receiver the previous three seasons, before he signed a $40 million, five-year contract with Seattle last spring, owning just 35 receptions in seven games— and with Seattle (2-5) absorbing consecutive losses of 20-plus points for the first time since 2001.

“From what he told me, it didn’t affect him, it didn’t bother him,” Houshmandzadeh said of Hasselbeck. “But I guess other people felt otherwise.”

Coach Jim Mora and offensive coordinator Greg Knapp both said they’ve talked to Houshmandzadeh this week, and that all is well.

“Man, I’ve been doing that my whole career. Guys from Cincinnati texted me and told me they were surprised it took me until Game 7 to do it,” Houshmandzadeh said of his stomping and griping.

“Whether I was right or wrong—which, you know, (I was) probably wrong— it was just the competitor in me. I didn’t mean no harm by it. I was just upset by the course of the game, which I would hope everybody is. People express themselves differently, obviously, but it never got this much attention before.

“I’m shocked.”

Houshmandzadeh said he felt compelled to approach his three-time Pro Bowl passer this week and tell Hasselbeck: “Br’, if I’ve got a problem with you I will tell you.’

“That’s just how I am. I don’t send subliminal messages. If I’ve got a problem with Matt, I will tell Matt. And I didn’t have a problem with Matt, at the time. I just wanted the ball. We were losing the game, and it was a big third down. Had we completed it, I would have been fine.”

Monday, Hasselbeck said of Houshmandzadeh’s fire: “That’s kind of his demeanor. There’s no issue there. The issue is, we have to complete more passes.”

Hasselbeck made a point of mentioning he nominated Houshmandzadeh to be the team’s player representative for this season.

Houshmandzadeh sought comfort this week in those who know him best. He talked for an hour on Tuesday with Carson Palmer(notes). Houshmandzadeh said his old Bengals quarterback never had a problem with his antics because Palmer “knew me, knew I was a team guy.”

Wednesday, he commiserated with Bengals receiver and friend Chad Ochocinco(notes).

Asked to assess his season, Houshmandzadeh quickly replied, “Oh, terrible.”

“People lie. Numbers don’t. As of right now, I’m not doing anything. I don’t know why it is like that. … I like myself man, I really do. I feel like I’m always open. And there’s times that I’m not open, and I’m supposed to feel like I’m open.

Yes, Houshmandzadeh thinks he should get the ball on every pass play.

“You watch the tape, you’ll see the same thing I’m seeing,” he said. “That’s why I’m optimistic.

“Hey, there’s games left. I’ve just got to build Matt’s trust and confidence with me.”

This receiver who may be more than the usually staid Seahawks bargained for also had an opinion on his team cutting Edgerrin James(notes), the league’s fading active leading rusher who was hugely popular with his new teammates. The move came Tuesday, two days after Mora told his players if he had to fire guys to turn the season around he would.

“It was a shock what happened, the guys who were released, especially ‘Edge’ because he’s just a good dude, you know what I’m saying?” Houshmandzadeh said. “Teams should just have him in the locker room—even if he can’t play, so they think. Just have him in the locker room because he’s cool. I mean, he’s good for (the) team.

“That’s my opinion, and I think that the opinion of a lot of guys. But we’ve just got to just play.”

Dude doesnt even hold a candle to Largent. Not even close.

I wish this cocksucker would just shut the fuck up and do his job and play ball. Nobody is paying you to act like a bitch. Play your position or retire and try to be a GM or coach. Shit makes me so sick with football today. Like when a bitch ass wide reciever gets up from an incomplete pass and right away wanna look for a flag or jump around and try to coax a flag out of a ref. Walk your dumb ass back to the huddle and do your job. Catch the fuckin ball, thats all I want you to do. Quit bitching about it not being thrown your way, or you want a flag or whatever.

Dugless206, you are wrong there. Housh is good. He just doesn't get the ball thrown in his direction a whole lot, especially when he's open. It's Knapp that's fucking it up for Housh. Hasselbeck just needs to run his own offense, and forget about what predictable Knapp is calling. Fuck Knapp. Hope that sucka Knapp is gone after this season. However, I hope Housh is still with the Hawks throughout the rest of his contract. He's got great hands, and can run a route. Give Housh the Ball...<the movement!

"forget about what predictable Knapp is calling" huh? you drunk buddy lol i feel you though. im talkin more in general than just housh. i think he's a great talent and im glad we have him. but like I said he doesnt hold a fucking candle to Largent, who held every single recieving record when he retired. everything. with little god given talent. these fuckers nowdays could use some direction from these old timers. half of these fruitcakes that play football nowadays make me sick. and if you believe Knapp is the only problem you need to put the bottle down my friend. there is plently blame to go around and knapp is towards the bottom of the list of problems

What? I never said anything about Largent. Any Seahawks fan with a good mind knows that any Seahawks WR doesn't hold a candle to his accomplishments. I am talking about todays Seahawks receivers. If Knapp(taking a nap) isn't the problem, than the Hawks have problems. Because everyone knows what he's going to call on offensive plays. I'd rather have Gil back to call the plays.

^i dont really have a problem with the play calling in general. and of course nobody holds a candle to largent, im just saying that I miss the old school players who did their job and didnt bitch all the time, not just housh.

also, im curious to know if any other team in the nfl has as many local players as we do. cj wallace, louis rankin, lawyer milloy, nate burleson, roy lewis, marcus trufant, its seems like we always want to bring in local guys, michael bumpus, etc.

Jones has bruised chest

The injury that knocked Julius Jones out of Sunday’s game against the Cardinals and forced the Seahawks’ leading rusher to spend the night in a Phoenix hospital was a bruised chest that caused bleeding in his lungs.

That was the word this morning from coach Jim Mora on his weekly radio show on KIRO-FM. Mora said after the game that Jones had broken a rib.

“It wasn’t a rib. It’s a bruise causing bleeding in his lungs,” Mora said. “It doesn’t appear to be anything real serious. It’s serious obviously or he wouldn’t be in a hospital, but it’s something he’ll recover from quickly.

“We’re certainly thinking of him and wishing him the best. It’s tough when you have to leave a guy behind in the hospital. That weighs on everyone’s minds.”

In his absence Sunday, Justin Forsett ran for 123 yards on 17 carries as the Seahawks rushed for their highest total (164) since the season opener against the Rams (167).

Well I'll take an ugly ass win over a loss any day. I agree, though, didn't look too good for the Hawks, especially against a team like the Rams. But at the end of the day, A win is a win. Another thing I agree with you on, we better fucking win against the 49ers! Mainly because it's a home game, I hate when we lose home games.

It's a home game against another NFC West team....losing is not an option. The playoffs might not be in our near future but we have to start making giant steps towards success for next year. Jesus fuck, I'm already talking about next year, so wack.

Well when your team is plagued by so many key injuries, WHILE the whole team is learning new systems, you can't really expect them to play top notch football all season long. So to me, the outcome so far in this season is really no surprise to me.
