So its obvious that sales in rap have been struggling...looking at soundscan you can see it, shits been going down massively especially in the past few years.

"Though music sales are down overall, rap sales slid a whopping 21 percent from 2005 to 2006, and for the first time in 12 years no rap album was among the top 10 sellers of the year" - Fox News.com

Talking about 2007 so far...
"According to Variety, CD sales, already down 32% from this same time last year, suffered a tremendous drop. Thirty-seven of the thirty-eight holdovers in the Top 40 experienced staggering double-digit decreases last week, including mainstays like Akon's double-platinum Konvicted, which dropped 20% to 60,000. " - SOHH.com

So what's going on? What do you think is the cause of this? The internet, pirating, the quality of music, over saturation, a combination of them or anything else..

that Akon album dropped hella months ago and is still sellin better than most the shit out there, he is easily the biggest artist right now

the problem is, the commercial rappers arent makin them huge hits like a couple years ago, so the rich white people aint out there coppin em....and theres not a whole lot of people out there makin solid albums, and the internet is just makin that more and more obivious....every site has album reviews and all dat shit, so most people dont go and cop a cd asap, they read reviews and dont bother coppin shit

and i need to stop fuckin typin that much :dead: i aint even sure if that makes sense, fuck it

this gets discussed on here a lot. But I think the internet is the biggest thing effecting music sales. I don't download music. I might be hyped to hear an album and then people post songs off it here and other websites. If those songs don't impress me a lot of times Ill be like fuck it and buy it later on or sometimes I won't end up buying it.

Most people don't buy albums anymore because of the available use of iTunes. It has given consumers a choice on which songs they WANT to buy. Most of an album is garbage anyways nowadays

For Rap/Hip Hop music it is because of the downloading and lack of quality releases.

There was some study that looked at the "urban population" and their buying habits and they said that the music issue is huge for them because its almost like a status symbol of having the latest music and early. I think they mentioned some kind of statistic like of the "urban kid" population that while most had Ipods, only a few of them actually had computers and that most of the kids who had the ipods would go to a friends house and download things off of one computer. And of course the kid who had the computer had downloaded it illegally.

They also did a study on the "rock population" of kids who had Ipods and a majority of them had their own computer and that to them it didn't mater where they got the music from but they wanted to have it so they would have a mix of pirated music and legit music.

As you can see this opens a whole new can of worms into looking who is buying music and who is pirating music? Is it a social class thing? Is it a genre thing? Is it a generational thing?

But why is there the disparity it the "urban" vs. "rock" kids? Who listens to it? and why is it like that?

This is a question that can never be answered fully.

Also everyone who is looking into making CDs and albums, you guys need to think about the kids who are 11 and 12 years old right now. They are your buying population in a few years with the disposable income.

How do they get their music? How will you put your music in front of them? I dont know many kids who are in that age who know what a 12" vinyl and who knows if they'll even want these "bulky CD things" cluttering their car?

Its a crazy crazy time for music. We better adapt to the times and come up with a new plan of getting out our music otherwise who knows what will happen...

With Youtube, Torrents, and iTunes. People better find out the formula fast or else all the hard work is going to be wasted. Fools gonna end up broke if they still using the formula from the 90's.

One reason why album sales are going down is the lack of complete albums. Back in the days rappers were concerned about making complete albums, a complete package. Nowaydays rappers are throwing only singles together on their albums. The focus on that one or two banging singles instead of the whole thing is killing the album sales. Nobody cares about whole albums, and why should they when they can download the one hot song off an album? The market is overflooded with garbage rap and there is so much music available that music has become listen-and-throw-away, just a consumable object like a bottle of pepsi.
what we need is rappers making real albums again without 1000 features and 100 different producers. I couldn't give a fuck about somebody rapping over the same type of beat that nelly furtado or Gwen Stefani is singing to the next minute.

the price of cd's need to drop, who wants to pay 20 dollar for an album anymore when its just so much easier to download it for nothing? i know that sucks for all the hard working artists and stuff, but the only ones really buying cd's these days are the ones who truely want to support the artists, its no longer a supply and demand issue, so i think if cd's dropped to around 5 to 8 dollars and they threw in some awsome cover art and booklets, they'd sell a little bit more and make a slightly bigger profit

Too expensive

Downloading is here to stay learn to make money off the net or don't eat

Str8 up. I think that over time rappers especially have been disrespecting their fans. Not really local ones, but if you trip flossing and ballin is the number one subject of major rappers. Why the fuck would I want to spend my money paying a muthafucka who is a big time hustler and would be makin money regardless, let them tell it. Then the muthafucka does an interview, has nothing to say except that he has an album about to drop and go pickup 4 copies. He has songs for the ballers, the ladies, and his momma. Like somebody said, niggaz need a new gameplan.
