I've always loved RPGs but it seems to me that RPGs this generation are just lacking something?

JRPGs have slowly drifted away from anime characters into more realistic models. The games are plagued with super small text that is impossible to read without a huge TV (I'm looking at you Star Ocean). The battle systems are just boring (and believe it or not some of us like to control all of our characters, not just one!).

Is it just me, or is something missing.

If you're an RPG fan I'd like to hear your opinion.

Also, what is the best RPG this go around?

People are using RPG elements to improve other genres now, making an RPG only appeals to a handful of the market. It's being absorbed into games with mass market appeal, not too many people want to play turn based RPG's anymore. It's just turning into a niche market now.

please note, when i say RPG by no means do I mean any form of WRPG like Fallout.

no offense but if anyone feels to answer with a WRPG related comment, please know ahead of time your opinion is completely void.

alot of rpg elements have been added to FPS games now and I think that is the direction all genres of games will be heading, it gives games more depth and longevity.

I got this from urbandictionary:

"WRPG
Role Playing games made by people who live in or are from the "West" such as Canada and the United States of America. WRPGs include Daggerfall,Arena, Morrowind, and Oblivion(All 4 part of the Elder Scroll series). Other games include Mass Effect, and KoToR 1/2.

WRPG Lover: WRPGS PWNZ!! WHOOOO!! YEAAAHH!!!! Oblivion for teh win!
JRPG Lover: Newb! WRPGS are stupid! JRPGS totally own your lame run around and kill stuff things, no strategy!
Neutral RPG "lover": i think they're both fine..
JRPG/WRPG Lovers: STFU NUB!!"

Sure they arent pure rpg, but fallout, oblivion and mass effect 1&2 are easily the best games ever made. I think the days of pure rpgs are over...

My complaint with most modern RPGs are they are way too linear. That's the one thing hybrid western RPGs like fallout have got right is the idea of exploration and having an open world

I don't give a damn if Mass Effect 1&2 are WRPG's. If you own a 360 (or pc) and you DON'T play them something is wrong with you.

As far as strictly JRPG's are concerned, Tales of Vesperia was good (horrible voice acting), Valkyria Chronicals (rpg/strategy) was on point, FF 13 is actually ok (even though they hold your hand for a bit) and that is all I can think of right now. I didn't get into S.O. because I didn't like the art style.
