Wu is played the fuck out also. When i saw them the mics were all fucked up, they had no organization and didnt even look like they wanted to be there. Meth and Redman tore it up, alone, at the Smokeout Festival last year. I just dont think 10 guys on stage can really rock a show the right way (unless its a full band, and in that case the Coup was one of the best performers at the Rock the Bells i went to.)

Just added to the already epic Rock the Bells bill are SNOOP DOGG, A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, DJ PREMIER and very special guest MS. LAURYN HILL!

West-coast marvel, Snoop Dogg, will be performing Doggystyle in its entirety. The set will also feature guest performances by Warren G, Tha Dogg Pound, Lady of Rage and RBX. A Tribe Called Quest is slated to perform Midnight Marauders, the album that pioneered the fusion of hip hop and jazz, in its entirety. DJ Premier will perform a unique tribute to Gang Starr, the revolutionary duo comprised of himself and the late MC Guru. And very special guest, the legendary Ms. Lauryn Hill, will have a unique set prepared exclusively for Rock the Bells, featuring songs from her critically acclaimed album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill spanning through her work with The Fugees and more.

I've seen some really good acts at Rock the Bells over the years and I'll be going to this one if the price is right. The Rock the Bells @ ATT Park was definitely put together better than the one's at Shoreline. Always makes me SMH when I see a huge Hip Hop Festival though with no Bay Area Heads. Rock the Bells @ ATT had Hiero, Coup and Blackalicious not a bed Bay Area representation.

Yeah the ones at ATT and in Concord (the year before that) had dope sets from Bay Area artists, as well as crazy special guests. I remember seeing Kweli and Mos Def, then Dave Chappelle came out and did a few jokes before introducing Kanye (before he got known for the dumb shit) where they all performed together.

The last one at shoreline was definitely not as good as the other few I went to, but I think it's because the line-up hasn't changed that much over the years except Rage and the first "reunion" of wu-tang. Last year was supposed to be Nas/Jr Gong but they didn't even have an album out to perform.

This year looks dope though, having those artists perform those classic albums in their entirety was a great idea to keep it fresh.

i went last year because i thought K'Naan was gonna be there. (He was only at the eastcost dates tho)

It was cool. I just wasn't really super prepared to be in the blazing sun for like 10 hours and shit. I brought a sandwhich, a 40, and like a quarter of dro.

If you go I recommend bringing like 5 sandwhiches, 4 40's, and a quarter of dro.

I was about to pass out at one point until my patna gave me his water bottle to refill at the refill stations.

I don't think i spent any money besides the ticets tho.

I posted this on my Facebook earlier:

Griff and I went to Rock the Bells yesterday. I'm writing this down because it was a lot to process and I don't want to forget anything...

It's probably safe to say that other than at the LA show the previous night, nothing like this has ever happened... and I doubt that something like this will ever happen again.

The show started w/Rakim performing Paid In Full in it's entirety, Slick Rick performed The Great Adventures Of..., after that KRS performed Criminal Minded, and then DJ Premier came out and spun records for a half hour or so in memory of Guru (RIP.)

Rakim - I Know You Got Soul at Rock the Bells ("It's been a long time... I shouldn't have left you... Without a strong rhyme to step to..."):

Note: In a post-concert interview, Rakim revealed that he based his flow/rhyme patterns/style/cadence on a jazz saxophone. He wanted to use his voice like a sax... He pulled it off.

Lauren Hill came out. Nobody was really sure if she'd show up or not because she's become sort of a recluse (I thought she'd flake.) She hasn't made many appearances over the past decade or so... She had a live band and did a bunch of songs from the Miseducation album. People cried during her performance. It was intense. She ended with Fugee La & Ready or Not, and had the crowd chanting her name upon making her exit.

People said she was rusty at the LA show the night before... But she pulled it together for this performance.

A Tribe Called Quest brought Busta Rhymes (he was a surprise guest, but people were talking about the Flipmode bus in the parking lot and a few people had put two and two together,) Jarobi and Spliff Star on stage for their set. Along with all of Midnight Marauders, they did a Scenario/Stop The Party mashup (that was insane) and a few other songs w/Bus and Spliff Star. Tip also reminded everyone that Midnight Marauders & Enter the Wu-Tang dropped on the same day in 1993, and Doggystyle came out a couple weeks later before going into Can I Kick It and doing some other Low End songs. They also did songs from Beats, Rhymes and Life and People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. Michael Rappaport (Zebrahead/Boston Public/Prison Break/etc.) was there and said he's working on ATCQ documentary. While he's taking his time on it, he says it's coming soon. Video of Tribe when Busta Rhymes came out:

Wu Tang killed it. ODB's oldest son was out there with them, doing all of ODB's parts (w/ODB's hairdo.) Meth & Rae actually did Torture on stage. They were supposed to do Enter the Wu Tang, but in addition to that, Meth ended up doing Da Rockwilder, and they did a few other post-36 Chambers songs. Meth didn't know he was going to be doing that song, RZA threw it in because he wanted to hear it. People were holding up lighters for Can It Be All So Simple.

@BusaBusss (Busta Rhymes): "WUTANG KILLIN' SHIT RIGHT NOW!!!ROCK THE BELLS TOUR!!!" via Twitter.

RZA gave the Bay Area hella props. He recognized the Bay and Sway & Tech for playing their records when nobody else would. Video of Wu performing Triumph:

Snoop Doggy Dogg was announced (yeah, not Snoop Dogg.) A mini-movie was shown, and after the smoke cleared, you could see the backdrop (it's the cover of Doggystyle.) "Yeahhh... This is another story about a dogg... But a dog that don't pee on trees..." You know the voice. G Funk Intro starts to play (all of Snoop's set was played by a live band, by the way,) and The Lady of Rage comes out complete with leather and afro puffs (hearing 20,000 people scream "R-A-G to the mothafuckin E" in unison is awesome.) Later, Snoop Doggy Dogg comes out to perform Gin & Juice in the same Penguins jersey he wore in the music video. There was a c-walking dog on stage (think Kanye's bear mascot from his first tour.) Daz, Kurupt and RBX are all there... For every skit on the album, he had a video that accompanied it.

@Raekwon: "Peace yall jus got off stage and changed my clothes to see the legendary @SnoopDogg!" via Twitter.

When He got to Ain't No Fun, Snoop told us to sing all of Nate Dogg's parts. Snoop said he'd take a video back to Nate, who's still in the hospital. As far as I could tell, there were no backing tracks, everything was live. Somewhere along the way, Warren G did Regulator (he didn't know he was doing the song, it was a surprise to him.) Along with Doggystyle, he also did Deep Cover and Stranded on Death Row. All live, all with the band. It was Snoop Doggy Dogg, it was like it was 1993 again, he wasn't the goofy celebrity that he's seemed to become... Video of the first two songs from Snoop's set:

Rakim: "For somebody that thinks he always has wordplay to fit the situation, there's certain things for rap that I have no words for. I been around since '86, and to see that out there and be a part of this tour right here, it's a blessing. I hope I'm around to see many more of these." via MTV News.

I heard that House of Pain, Canibus, Ras Kass and Macy Gray were there just to watch. Pretty much any of the acts can say "I'm your favorite rappers favorite rapper." Rakim said he wasn't going to leave until he got to see Lauryn Hill's set. Raekwon was bragging on Twitter about having the best seat in the house for the Snoop Doggy Dogg set. I didn't see a single fight, not even a single arguement. Artists were watching each other's sets. Everybody was sharing food/drinks/weed. None of the artists were promoting themselves, they were celebrating each others music and an amazing era that we'll never see again. I've been to hundreds of hip hop shows, this one was the best by a wide margin. I don't think I'll ever see anything like that again.
