Stripping away a huge chunk of its protective interesting-character-actor armor, Hugh Laurie has decided not to be a part of MGM's upcoming RoboCop reboot, with Variety's Jeff Sneider reporting that he's "definitely out" of the villain role he was once set to play. Of course, as Sneider reminds, Laurie was never officially attached. But considering the film is due to start shooting in September, it seems as though producers had been charmed into thinking he was by Laurie's unfailingly polite Britishness, which prevented them from picking up on his apparent apathy. Oh, if only the British could come out of their shells of programmed quiet dignity and properly express their feelings, RoboCop wouldn't have to be scrambling to find someone else now. England: a nation of RoboCops.

Watchmen and A Nightmare on Elm Street‘s Jackie Earle Haley is signing on to star in the RoboCop remake that Jose Padilha will direct, says DL.

Haley will play Maddox, the guy who dispenses the military training to Robocop. Joel Kinnaman stars as the title character, while Gary Oldman, Hugh Laurie, Samuel L. Jackson and Abbie Cornish are also set and actors including Jay Baruchel are circling the final leads.

“In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the centre of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilises their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before. Director Jose Padilha reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel Kinnaman as the title character, Gary Oldman as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson as media mogul Pat Novak.”
Sounds terrible

With Hugh Laurie having excused himself for a spot of tea, never to return, the remake of RoboCop has had to find itself a new human being to replace him as the movie's villain, because cyborgs don't actually exist yet. Fortunately, they found someone equally capable of being quirkily charming, even as he insists on turning a dead man into a robot: Michael Keaton, who Deadline reports will assume the role of Raymond Sellars, CEO of OmniCorp and the man in charge of building RoboCop.

Though Keaton's kept busy with voiceovers, a few small indies, and 30 Rock guest spots, he hasn't actually been seen on screen much of late (his last major big-screen role was The Other Guys), so he's certainly a welcome addition to the cast—even if the remake's very reason to exist remains suspect. This announcement also offers the tentative hope that maybe Keaton will get to offer one of those inspirational, rallying-the-troops speeches he does so well.
