A robotic suit is helping people paralysed from the waist down do what was previously considered impossible - stand, walk and climb stairs.

ReWalk users wear a backpack device and braces on their legs and select the activity they want from a remote control wrist band.

Leaning forwards activates body sensors setting the robotic legs in motion.

Users walk with crutches, controlling the suit through changes in centre of gravity and upper body movements.

The device effectively mimics the exoskeletion of a crab.

Former Israeli paratrooper Radi Kaiof has been paralysed for the last 20 years following an injury during his service in the Israeli military.

He says the device has changed his life.

"I never dreamed I would walk again. After I was wounded, I forgot what it's like. Only when standing up can I feel how tall I really am and speak to people eye to eye, not from below."

The device, which is now in clinical trials in Tel Aviv's Sheba Medical Centre, is the brainchild of engineer Amit Goffer, founder of Argo Medical Technologies, a small Israeli high-tech company.

It was Goffer's own paralysis that inspired him to look for an alternative to the wheelchair for mobility.

The company claims that by maintaining users upright on a daily basis, and exercising even paralysed limbs in the course of movement, the device can alleviate many of the health-related problems associated with long-term wheelchair use.

Kate Parkin, director of physical and occupational therapy at NYU Medical Center in the US said the potential benefits to the user were two-fold.

"Physically, the body works differently when upright. You can challenge different muscles and allow full expansion of the lungs.

"Psychologically, it lets people live at the upright level and make eye contact."

Dr Mark Bacon, an expert at the UK charity Spinal Research, said: "There are a number of devices about which stabilise the trunk and can help with gait.

"Often they are very bulky and are only used for rehabilitation in specialist centres."

He said ReWalk might be a good option for some people.

"Sitting down in a wheelchair can be an issue for some people. Devices like this one might be appealing. However, it might not be any better than a wheelchair in terms of convenience.

"And these devices are only suitable for people who still have good control over their hands and shoulders."

so is it controlled with a joystick? That seems a little dangerous, i bet they are working on invasive brain/spinal impulse sensors. Regardless this is major, I know some paralyzed people that would kill for this. It will be a trip the first time I see it in person though.

^^^there's nothing evil about science- and dam most things around you are created by science and research. your going to tell me that if you got shot, you should just die instead of going through the emergency and having them save your life with equipment made by science. this discovery is fantastic and many of these folks never chose to be paralyzed (such as those shot and instantly paralyzed) but now they have a choice to be able to walk again and move again.

are you a johova witness? what does that have to do with what the topic is? science is terrific! without science you wouldn't have many of the things around you such as a car to drive you to church, a radio or tv discussing church views and news on the pope, you wouldnt have electricity to have light to read...prayer alone will not bring any of these things to fruitation. its the knowledge of man kind around you weather or not its through devine intervention is another story all together.

who the fucc is everybody?

and your hella retarded if you think a prayer alone is gonna make a crippled person just get up and walk....

dont you realize that "god" doesnt solve problems "he" gives us the opportunities to solve them ourselves....

maybe "god" gave the inspiration to build this equipment to the man who made it? ever think of that?

and maybe all the prayers of paralyzed people are being answered through this?

my cousin is in a fuccin wheelchair and i gotta watch his struggles every day and see how frustrating it is for him to live like this so this is an answer to his prayers if you ask him you asshole.....

i really hope your joking cuz if not you sound like one of them brainwashed religious types thats actually making religion and belief of god decline rather than advance....its people like you who make all religions look dumb....

i heard there was something similar to this being designed, but not for the paralyzed. its basically the same in concept but gives you superhuman strength. it would allow you to lift 500 pounds with the energy required to lift a sock.
