OAKLAND — A 15-year-old gang member was charged by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office on Monday in the killing of a rival gang member earlier this month.

Oakland police Officer Jason Andersen said the suspect admitted shooting Erik Monrroy, 15, who relatives and police said was a member of a differentgang, at 12:30 a.m. Sept. 2. Monrroy was shot while sitting on a porch with three other adults at a home in the 2500 block of Foothill Boulevard, Andersen said.

Monrroy was taken to Highland Hospital, where doctors determined he was brain-dead. He was placed on life support and died at 3:41 p.m.

The name of the suspect charged Monday was not released because he is a juvenile but he is a sophomore at Oakland High School, police said.

He was arrested Friday by members of the Oakland Police Department Gang Intelligence Unit, not far from his Fruitvale district home.

Anderson developed a possible street name for the suspect, which helped link him to the slaying.

Anderson praised Oakland High School Officer Melissa Centeno with confirming the suspect's name. Police are still seeking another person who was with the suspect when the shooting happened.

About a week after Monrroy was killed, shots were fired outside the Colonial Chapel funeral home while Monrroy's body lay inside for a viewing. No one was injured, and the viewing was immediately canceled. Police later recovered a gun near the scene

of the shooting and arrested a 17-year-old, whose name was not released, on suspicion of shooting a truck outside the chapel, and Raul Acosta, 18, of Oakland.

Police said Acosta did not fire any shots but stirred up the crowd and urged the 17-year-old to fire. Both are suspected gang members, police said.
