what are the "good 'ol days?" if your talkin about late 80's/early 90's i got one set of lyricists. if you mean early 00's i got a whole different set.

off the top of my head:

devin the dude
redman
raekwon
ghostface
talib kweli
common
freeway (getting better)
ice cube (hella lookin forward to new one)
jay-z
murs
canibus (just needs to get away from dzk and warlab)
scarface
rza/bobby digital

i'll probably catch shit for this one but....CAGE! he has evolved more than any emcee in my opinion. from his old shit (agent orange) to "movies for the blind" <---best storytelling album EVER, to the "wethermen" side project with el-p/yak ballz/tame one/aesop rock/camu tao (R.I.P), to his side project group "smut peddlers" with mr. eon and mighty mi, to "hells winter", to "leak bros." (him and tame one, whole album dedicated to smoking sherm), to "depart from me". his discography is like watching someone grow up right in front of you. especially if you grew up listening to him and then get to look at his collection and see the transformation.
Freeway?!? Are you serious?????????

He's always sucked ass...

And yes.. I do agree with you about Canibus. He just went fuckin' overboard in conspiracy theory banter and RUINED a WHOLE album... smh.

i agree with andre 3000. but big boi? it seems to me like big boi always kept the same rhyme scheme and what not but andre 3000 not only branched out as an artist but also stepped his rhyme game way the fuck up. look at speker boxxx/tunnel of love, big boi stayed in his comfort zone and stuck to doing what he knows. dont get me wrong, he's a talented emcee but andre 3000 is on a whole different level. case in point: andre's verse at 3:40. incredible! really give that shit a listen and tell me it's not fuckin amazing.

thinkin outside the box, i gotta go with cee-lo from goodie mob. he's been wreckin shit for a long time and never lost his touch on the mic. his verse on "big ole' words" clearly shows he is way ahaed of your average hip hop artist from the south. in particular, the second verse:

[Verse One: Cee-Lo]
In no fashion have I lost my passion for the pen
It's just that lately life has been a lost less inspirin
To tell you the truth trials and tribulations is very tirin
I gotta play a little game of gimmick and gunfirin
I'm not aspirin to be any lower or higher than,
I get equal as in eye to eye again
I'm the truth, I'm complicated I'm all ready but try again
I've got to die once to never ever die again
And what I believe within I engrave within my skin
And one thang that I ain't is a saint without a sin
How could there be a now if there never was a then?
That is unbalanced just like the yang without the yen
I am distinguishably deeper as opposed to the paper-thin
And I breathe oxygen, and you rhymin bout rocks again
You stagnant, standing still enough to feel the world spin
I'm beginning to smell the end in the path of the blowing wind
Hopefully I'm fortunate enough to spend forever with a friend
I'm slow dancing with destiny every day until then
When I first got my big break I said that I would never bend
And discredit my character to keep up or contend
And my belief beat baseline secrete such a special blend
I am not like them at all and I cannot pretend
I am not like you at all and I cannot pretend.

[Verse Two: Cee-Lo]
I get off on an extension or compare comprehension
I'm in a classroom of my own, I'm too far gone for competition
Yet I'm never obnoxious with my obvious ambition
Perfectly imperfect is my dimension's definition
I engage my pen pierces the page so that it bleeds my intention
With honorable mention of God's divine intervention
I'm incredible I'm inevitable and there's no possible prevention
I'll hardly (have to) scream my dream and I'll have your undivided attention
The powers that be will be beaten into submission
And you will be able to see my revolution on television
You'll get an aneurysm fuckin around with my head on collision
With the power to get you dead and half the dead risen
I remember when my development was arrested
I was doin time on my mind misguided and misdirected
I was sick, so sick if I spoke to you you'd be infected
Then my conscience was cleared of all charges and I came out corrected
Reinvented, refined, replenished and well rested
On a mission for a medium to manifest the thoughts I collected
After that everything I breathed upon, I blessed it
I committed crimes of passion and my soul was suspected
But it was thrown out of court because of course the Creator and I connected
He told me, "fear not for thou art protected. Your life is being requested
And you are being tested, so make every attempt you can to expect the unexpected."

[Verse Three: Cee-Lo]
I am internally evolving entirely
Extensive eclectic expression eloquently
Instantly innovative, Courageously creative
I'm driven, this God given gift it comes naturally to the native
Not a need for the dramatics or the systematic
Simplicities, strictly science and mathematics
The mastermind of the mighty mystical and magical moves
And metaphors manifests masterpieces
Thoroughly fury through the inner mind's eye establishes this syn-thesis
Of these innermost, insightful, intriguing interpretations of extreme intelligence
My commonsense is no co-incidence
Caution: competitors approach carefully
I'm able to see
Rare ranges of distance, I expect respect
There's no tolerance for negligence, never
You'll forever
Feel the wrath of the pure and powerful poetry, permanently
Pre-meditative, political, critical, compellin, story-tellin
Defining desire, faith fuelin the fire
Brilliance, pro-blackness, philosophical, psychological willingly waging warfare,
Withstandin, commandin, demandin the listening ears to hear what God's forcin
Instead endorsin education. Equality, not hate
Just revolution of the mind state
Note mere words but emotions
Which is essential, influential provin my people's potential
Militancy, innocence, insight, listen to God then write
Since my birth date I been tight!

I agree with mr pill popper above me that cee-lo was raw and continues to be raw

but as for outkast, they are my favorite group, both are talented emcees, but just because andre has evolved into the eccentric thing he is today that shouldn't (and doesn't) take away anything from big boi. Big Boi is the epitome of this thread, he was raw and remained raw as when he first came out. Andre on the other hand has evolved into much more of a musician and his lyrics & subject matter have progressed thru the years.

LOL at "mr pill popper"

well i guess youre right defy, the title of this thread is "rappers that STILL spit like they did 10-20 years ago" NOT "rappers that steadily got better over the years". and in that context, yes big boi is the EPITOME of the thread. andre 3000 on the other hand seems to have gotten bored with "rap". why else would he branch out and do movies, TV, rock n roll etc etc...? and saying it shouldnt take anything away from big boi is true, cause andre left big boi in the dust years ago. it just so happens they were in a group together, and be honest, did you not feel way back when they released Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik that andre 3000 was clearly the better of the duo? i knew back then that andre 3000 had that "IT FACTOR" while big boi just seemed to be your run of the mill generic down south rapper. looking back, big boi never left his "lane".

you think speakerboxxx/the love below went DIAMOND in the U.S. (11 times platinum) and two times platinum in the U.K. and GOLD in canda cause of big boi?

2003 Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
Fifth studio album
Release date: September 23, 2003
Label: LaFace/Arista Records
US: 11× Multi-Platinum (Diamond)
CAN: Gold
UK: 2× Platinum

EDIT: IM NOT TALKING SHIT OR ARGUING FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUING. I GENUINELY FEEL THIS IS A GREAT TOPIC OF DISCUSSION.

"the way you move" was a hit single. honestly at southernplayalistic... I did think Dre was just a bit better than big boi, but not leaps and bounds. that was until ATLiens, you could see Dre's progression, and it only got better since then. Every Outkast album has gone at least platinum, and that's not just because of Dre no matter how you spin it. Dre is the opposite of this thread, he is light years ahead of where he was when they first dropped. Big Boi is still a dope rapper, but he hasn't really progressed/regressed.

oh wait, I forgot we on siccness where if you disagree with someone then you got e-beef....FUCK YOU MUTHAFUCKA!!!!!

I disagree with this, his voice sounds rougher now and his flow isnt as smooth as it once was. If he can go back to how he was around the Time Will Reveal era id be mad happy...
