I DEFINITELY SEE A DISTICTION BETWEEN THE TWO. I TRY TO LET IT BE KNOWN TO PEOPLE WHO ASK ME WHAT I LISTEN TO THAT I LISTEN TO MOSTLY NORTHERN CALI RAP AND NOT POP RAP OR HIP HOP BECAUSE I AM NOT REALLY INTO STUFF LIKE JAY-Z,MOS DEF, JA RULE,ETC.......

there different forms of hip hop and rap.like i wouldnt consider puff daddy equal to wu-tang but id call them both hiphop. and i wouldnt say biggie and lynch are in the same catogory but id call them both rappers. to me hiphop is about more than music they really get into what there sayin and try to send a message and its more about the lyrics, where as rap is kinda a story about what goes on in the streets and what people have been through and its mostly about the beats. its hard for me to really find any differences that you can use to seperate the two cuz some rappers do hiphop soundin shit and visa-versa.

PHIRST OPHH, JAY-Z AND MOS ARE NOT THE SAME KINDA RAPPERS...

WHOEVER CALLED HIP HOP SOPHT...HOW DO YOU PHIGURE? RAP IS COO AS PHUC TO ME SO I AINT GONNA GET INTO WHY HIP HOP IS BETTER, BUT TRUE HIP HOP, THE UNDERGROUND SHIT THAT IS LISTENED TO ON THE EAST, IS SOME OPH THE HARDEST LYRICAL SHIT IVE EVER HEARD...

ALSO, RAP BEING THE UNDERGROUND SHIT, AND HIP HOP BEING ON THE RADIO...HMMM...
I THINK OPH IT THE OTHER WAY AROUND PHOR THE MOST PART...JAY-Z IS NOT HIP HOP, JA RULE IS NOT HIP HOP...THEY ARE RAP

MOS DEPH IS HIP HOP, TALIB KWELI IS HIP HOP...IPH YOU WATCH THE OLD HIP HOP MOVIES LIKE WILD STYLE OR BEAT STREET, YOU WOULD UNDERSTAND WHAT HIP HOP IS, ITS NOT JUST MUSIC, ITS A WHOLE LIPHESTYLE (DJ'S, WRITERS, BREAKERS, PHREESTYLERS) THAT MANY PEOPLE SWEAR BY, ITS A RELIGION AND A HOBBIE...ITS NOT WHATS TRENDY AT THE TIME...ITS THE EXACT OPPOSITE...ABA

P.S. P DIDDY IS THE PHURTHEST THING PHROM HIP HOP I HAVE EVER WITNESSED!

i see it like this..rap it apart of hip hop. To me, Hip hop is 1) mc'ing 2) breaking 3) grafitti and 4) DJ'ing...rap comes from hip hop..and although there are different type of rap..and in the bay its gangsta rap..its still part of the hip hop "culture"...put thats just my 2 cents.

OOOOOH- EVER SO WRONG HOMIE....

What i was saying that now in the year 2002 thats what it is. Gangsta RAP (Brotha Lynch, X-raided, C-BO etc.) is not on the RADIO and Hip-Hop (Nelly,Puff Daddy, Jay-Z, Ja Rule) is all over the radio. Hip Hop and Rap are two different things but in a sense they are the same.

uunderground hip hop is like grouch, zion i, dialeted peoples, livin legends, mystik journeymen and all the others... its more about lyrics and shit.. and its for more diverse croud.. lots of younger kids like it as well as older people

rap is more about stories and violence then about who can make up the most complex lyrics

i dont like how all the hip hop beats sound soft and similar... and the mcs flow kinda soft and steadily.. i just like rap better but hiphop is cool, i go to tons of hip hop shows still

peace

word!

hip hop is emotion and messages released through those mentioned above mediums... rap is a part of the whole... if you like rap you got to respect hip hop. to quote an article by Davey D
"Hip hop is the culture from which rap emerged. Initially it consisted of four main elements; graffiti art, break dancing, dj (cuttin' and scratching) and emceeing (rapping). Hip hop is a lifestyle with its own language, style of dress, music and mind set that is continuously evolving. Nowadays because break dancing and graffiti aren't as prominent the words 'rap' and 'hip hop' have been used interchangeably. However it should be noted that all aspects of hip hop culture still exists. They've just evolved onto new levels."

and for those who dont consider your favorite bay artist as hip hop - read this:
"according to hip hop's founding fathers... Afrika Bambaataa, Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash... artists like Ice Cube, C-Bo and Spice1 are indeed a part of hip hop culture... This question was posed to all three last year during a radio show that sought to define Hip Hop culture.. It took place on KMEL in April of '97... All three were on.. and they spoke about the constant misinformation that is perpuated by people who have a strong like or dislike about certain styles within hip hop... Just because someone doesn't like or understand something does not mean it's not hip hop..."

-just remember anything can go pop...

Yup...Puffy to Lynch...theyre all rap...you dont see a hip hop section in a store and a seperate section for rap..hip hop is the culture..
