Those #s for Bela aren't sad at all. Be proud of the dude, those are good #s for a regional indie release. I think it's cool the fans have high expectations of our artists, it shows yall believe! But this is the reality of it all...

Bay rap sells well in Kansas City, that's why it's out there. Sure there's a few people up on it all over, but it's still mostly regional, and it really don't get no real promotion nationwide. Music sales ain't what they used to be either, and for everybody buying a cd, there's 4 people burning it on a cd-r or whatever. All in all, you can't really be surprised. Even the DJ Quik and Warren G albums, I didn't hear about it that much. The rap game is a bitch right now.

Tell that to Nelly, Eminem, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, The Game, Kanye West, Ludacris, and everyone else selling multi-platinum. Yes more people are downloading mp3's but at the same time theres obviously millions and millions of people still willing to buy cd's too.

Those DJ Quik & Warren G numbers prove two things. A good name with poor promotion will hurt you, and rappers have a shelf life. I'll say it right now... DJ Quik and Warren G will NEVER sell big numbers again as solo artists. Brand names like Snoop Dogg even have a hard time. The nature of rap music itself hardly leaves any room for a long-term career as a rapper.

There's still a ton of money to be made in the music business but most cats are too stuck on the past to see the future.

These are cats who get their singles played on every music video channel and radio station across the world 20 damn times a day. They're more pop than anything, and with the number of people listening to 50 Cent, he could sell a lot more. There isn't a person in any country where televisions are common who doesn't know who he is. How many rappers can have that promotion? Because that ain't normal, that's force feeding. I musta seen Kanye West's fuckin Gold Digga video 100 times and I don't even watch tv that much. I kinda thought it was cool at first, but I was sick of that shit two weeks after it came out. Ain't really healty to have those few overexposed people get all the damn tv and radio time, while everybody else gets crumbs. Shit gets tiring as hell.

1. About Quik & Warren G... Do you think they would have sold more if they had been new artists releasing their debut album in the same conditions? That is, young west coast rappers, in 2005, with almost no promotion. If not, what's your point?
2. Aight, I'm stuck in the past, I can't see the future. What IS the future?

but see if it was marketed right it COULD sell...the problem is for example here in KC no kids in the suburbs are buying a blegit album. BUT when tech n9ne released Anghellic he sold TWENTY THOUSAND first week JUST IN kansas city...why? cuz all the white kids in the burbs were up on him. that's where the money is, the suburbs

They definitely gotta step that marketing up. If the major radio stations and MTV, BET and whoever else ain't playing yo shit, find another way to make it heard.

without a major marketing budget, it is still a regional release for the most part. you need big figures to be able to market a project on a national scale, and on top of that you need to remember its pay-for-play on the radio. like i said though, its coo that you care. thats what we need, fans that care. next step is to do something about it...word of mouth, requests, etc...

They need to do some real hardcore marketing. I'm talkin about hittin the suburbs, kickin in people's doors, puttin a gun to they face and forcing em to listen to the album.
"This shit slappin' right?
-Please don't kill me, oh Lord please, I have money, take my jewelry...
-Shut up! Listen to my shit! Rick Rock made that beat, punk!"

But seriously though, there's a level of street promotion that can be done easily to at least let people know your album dropped. I'm sure it's hella people who know B-Legit and ain't know he got a new album out.

For someone who doesn't watch tv much, that none of that should matter to you.

1. About Quik & Warren G... Do you think they would have sold more if they had been new artists releasing their debut album in the same conditions? That is, young west coast rappers, in 2005, with almost no promotion. If not, what's your point?
The point is clear. Better promotion = better chance of success. Having a name that isn't played out yet = better chance of success. I wasn't talking about "young west coast rappers, in 2005, with almost no promotion" so what is your point?

2. Aight, I'm stuck in the past, I can't see the future. What IS the future?
Not that played out 90's music & hustle. I've already spoke on this topic plenty of times before though so I'm not too interested in beating the dead horse.
