While the bout isn't official yet, mmajunkie says that James Toney is likely to make his MMA debut against UFC Hall-of-Famer, Randy Couture on UFC 118 in Boston:

In a match likely to re-ignite the "boxing vs. MMA" debate, a bout between 10-time UFC champion Randy Couture (18-10 MMA, 15-7 UFC) and former boxing champion James Toney (0-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) is targeted for the UFC's first trip to Boston.

Fighters Only was the first to report the possibility of the pairing, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed that while the matchup is far from official, it's in the works for a headlining spot at the event.

The weight where the bout is going to be contested at hasn't been announced yet. Couture has been fighting at 205 for his last few bouts, and even though Toney and his trainer, Juanito Ibarra, has said in the past that they want to debut at heavyweight, the boxer weighed in at 217 on his last match, so a drop to 205 seems feasible.

UFC 118 will be headlined by a lightweight championship rematch between BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar, and according to the report, Toney's debut will likely be the co-headliner. A lightweight bout between contenders Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard is also being targeted.

^^Couture is going to beat him by going straight to the ground not striking with him.

Toney is a shot fighter regardless.

Anyways, it's kinda of insulting that someone with zero experience in that sport can walk in and be on PPV and face one of its sports best. lmao I mean does that happen in any other sport?

He will strike with him once he knows that Toney is gassed.
Couture is a former golden gloves champion, he can box.
Dana is doing it to make MMA look good.

I blame Toney for not landing a fight where he should be. In the boxing ring.

Why would toney gas if they are only striking? Toney fights 12 round boxing matches for a living. He will gas if they go to the ground.

His boxing skills are no where near that of a pro boxer, especially someone with the skills of toney, shot or not. Randy is smart. Maybe he'll strike for the first 30 seconds to 1 minute to kinda see what toney's all about, after that he'll take him to the ground or rush him against the cage. Randy is a smart guy, he knows he cant out-box a boxer.

Dana is doing it to make MMA look good.
Yeah, he's definitely doing it to say look how easy an mma guy beats a boxer but of course he's not going to mention toney is a shot fighter, fat, old and way past his prime.

I blame Toney for not landing a fight where he should be. In the boxing ring.
well that's one way to look at it, still everyone else you would think would get a lesser skilled opponent for the first couple fights, not some top level all time great legend.

That's like Lance Armstrong talking shit about boxing, then getting a shot at Bernard Hopkins in his first ever boxing match. lol

That's why I originally said he will strike with him at the end. I just didnt clarify that I believe he will take him to the ground at the beginning.

Toney will gas because ground work (to me) is a lot more exhausting than striking. He's going to be fighting for his life down there.

Old UFC fans (former boxing fans) know Toney is shot. The majority of new UFC fans don't even know who Toney is. New boxing fans don't even know who Toney is.

I see what you mean. But the way I see it is toney will be tapped out the moment they go to the ground, there wont be a chance for striking after that. I mean, what the hell is the old butterball toney gonna do on the ground?? he cant defend himself against some basic moves, he'll be toast.

As for new boxing fans not knowing toney, yeah i guess 90's babies. or maybe the casual boxing fan that just watches pacquiao/mayweather.

Nah, he'll be fine. Didn't you see his interview? He knows leg kick blocks and all that stuff. Haha.

Ya those are the boxing fans I am talking about. "Hey did you see that Pacquiao fight where he fought some guy and the guy just blocked the whole time?"

Yes, it was Clottey and it was over a month ago...now leave me alone.

Couture is gonna body slam this fool untill hes completely out of stamina and can't throw with him anymore...

I wouldn't be suprised to see the old man finally use a submission though..That would be smart on his part..

if anything Couture will clinch & dirty box him for 15 minutes. Where else is Dana gonna put Toney? A fight night? Pshh. Dana's a businessman. Of course he's gonna put him on PPV. Haha. Couture one of the sports best? Yeah maybe four years ago. Now a Days Randy is a Gatekeeper at best in a stacked division.

I don't give a shit if randy is 65 years old. James Toney has never fought an MMA fight before in his life and is a shot boxer. It's a total mismatch.
