Raiders Sign Newberry, Restructure Jordan and Curry's Contracts

The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent offensive lineman Jeremy Newberry.
Raiders.com The Oakland Raiders have signed two-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman Jeremy Newberry. Newberry has started all 90 games in which he has played since entering the NFL as a second round pick by San Francisco in 1998. He earned Pro Bowl bids at center in 2001 and 2002.
"In researching and evaluating Jeremy's background and history, it became obvious that he is a perfect fit for the Raiders right now," said Raiders Head Coach Lane Kiffin. "He is an intense competitor and definitely understands what being a team player is all about."
Newberry spent the 2006 season with the 49ers on injured reserve after starting 10 league games for San Francisco in 2005. The versatile performer has started at tackle, guard and center during his NFL career.
"When this opportunity presented itself, I made it known that I wanted to play across the Bay for the Raiders, as I have a ton of respect for Al Davis and this organization," said Newberry. "I'm very excited about what Coach Kiffin has got going and I am excited to be reunited with some people that I have worked with in the past, Greg Knapp and Tom Rathman in San Francisco, and my college position coach, Tom Cable. I'm looking forward to helping this team get back to its glorious past and winning ways."
His 49er linemates voted Newberry the team's top offensive lineman in 2005, the third time in his career that he received that honor. In 2004, Newberry played in the season opener and helped the 49ers produce over 300 yards in total offense before missing action for the balance of the season due to injury.
Newberry was voted the team's top offensive lineman in 2003 for the second time after starting all 16 league games for the 49ers, anchoring a line that finished third in the NFC in rushing and total offense. He started all 16 league games and two postseason contests for the 49ers in 2002 en route to his second consecutive Pro Bowl selection.
In 2001, Newberry was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career after leading a 49ers offensive line that ranked second in the NFL in rushing. Newberry's linemates voted him the team's top offensive lineman for the first of three times in 2000, after he set the pace for a line that helped generate over 6,000 yards in total offense.
The Antioch, California native was an All-Conference performer at Cal before being selected with the 58th overall pick by San Francisco in the '98 draft. He saw action at both guard and center during his college career after shifting from defensive line as a freshman.
