get a digi001 or an mbox from about $200-$500, and get the latest version of protools and youll be straight... you should prolly get protools free first so you can mess with it be for you buy, but once you learn it youll have an extremely powerful program

pro tools works

It's easiest to use if you're just doing alot of recording work and editing , mixing-mastering. Not the easiest for sequencing tracks. I've had it for 3 years now, still wouldn't go any other way. It's probably the most used by the Majors. If you're gonna have your stuff professionaly mixed and mastered they'll probably be using pro tools. Once you get to the TDM software with Pro Tools Hd or Accel cards, nothing else in the digital world is really messin with it.

It aint the cheapest tho.

i've worked wit ProTools, CoolEdit, Cubase, & Sonar...and personally i perfer Cubase and Sonar...for home recording go with CoolEdit (Adobe Audition), then Cubase or Sonar to start off with, then move up to ProTools if you really want to work with it...
