@ heresy

i think if you are calling the triton gay then you are calling all workstations gay.....it just dont make sence to me.

i understand what you mean about the people who buy one and sprinkle water on themselves and *poof* instant producer, but i dont think it should be considered useless, because its really not, its only limited by the user, not the board

i was also wondering if anyone on here uses offboard effects for their synths or workstations, and if so i was curious to see if it is actually something worth doing
@Bane - For me it is worth it. I've just started running some of my stuff through a Neve 1272, and to the ears of those recording in my spot the sound quality is alot "stronger". I did an A/B on the sound out of the 1272 vs. going directly into the computer, and I never knew how "thin" my keys really sounded unprocessed. Because of this, I'm now in the process of re-tracking/mixing alot of my unreleased work.

My current setup...

@BANE READ WHAT I POSTED. I SAID NOTHING ABOUT THE TRITON AND MPC BEING GAY.

"Next week I will become gay like the majority of people who make beats and call themselves producers. "

THE MPC HAS *NO* PLACE IN *MY* SETUP. I DON'T SAMPLE AND WHEN I DO SAMPLE IM USUALLY SAMPLING FROM A SPECIFIC SOURCE. I DONT SAMPLE SOUNDS ETC ETC ETC. I SEQUENCE ON CUBASE SX AND PRO TOOLS. I CAN DO MORE WITH THE TRACKS THAT WAY. I HAVE MY MIDI BRAINS CONFIGURED SO I WOULDNT NEED IT FOR THAT. I WOULDN'T NEED IT FOR SOUNDS EITHER.

THE TRITON HAS NO PLACE IN MY SETUP. I HAVE TWO WORKSTATIONS. DON'T REALLY *NEED* A THIRD. I COULD GET THE RACK VERSION IF I NEEDED THE SOUNDS. THE WORKSTATION DOESN'T OFFER ME ANYTHING THAT I COULD USE OR CONSIDER HELPFUL (BESIDES SOUNDS).

CALLING THE TRITON GAY IS NOT CALLING ALL WORKSTATIONS GAY. IT'S CALLING THE TRITON GAY BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY I DIDNT SAY THE TRITON WAS GAY....LOL.

I CAN MAKE A *SLAP*/*KNOCK* ON *ANY* WORKSTATION (ROLANDS, KURZWEILS,KORGS,YAMAHAS). RIGHT NOW THE TRITON AND MPC WILL SERVE ONE PURPOSE IN MY LAB:

1. EYE CANDY TO ATTRACT CUSTOMERS
2. THE OCCASIONAL SOUND I MIGHT USE FROM THE TRITON (WHICH I COULD GET IF I PURCHASED A RACK OR KARMA WHICH WOULD BE MORE USEFUL)

The Neve 1272 is a line amp/summing buss amp from 70's era Neve consoles rewired as a mic pre-amp. For a "better than I could give explanation" you can check out One Version of a "re-built" 1272 here. Other manufacturers of 1272 style pre's include Vintech, and Dan Alexander Audio.

As far as running the synths through verbs, delays, etc. yes I have from time to time. I'll turn the global/patch effects off in my synth/module and run the dry output through something external to get a different sound. This is really a cheap way to get some "new" sounds if you don't program your own and have gotten tired of the presets

@heresy... i think you are maken a good move with the triton... like you said its eyecandy... its like stampin a jumpman on your studio... plus from your posts, you seem like a very inteligent individual... so i know you should have no problem diggin inside the beast and pullin out its real capabilities... once you get past the preset skin, you actually have an extremely powerful machine

A little history on NEVE

Here's the deal:

A 1272 was originally a line amp on a Neve 80 series board. Those line amps used the same circuit as the preamps, just without a few components. They can be modded into mic preamps fairly easily. That's what you're getting with an Averill or Marquette 1272 - a modded line amp with a few parts added to convert it into a preamp instead of a line amp. They've also been "gone through" to bring them back up to spec - replacing old capacitors, etc.

Neve 1073's use the EXACT same "card" as a 1272, yet have an additional gain stage and EQ. Otherwise, they're identical to 1272's. They both use the same transformers - St Ives. The trannies have a MAJOR effect on the sound. Strictly as a preamp, a 1272 and a 1073 are pretty much identical sonically, although Allen's correct - the 1073's have more gain available, and greater headroom because of the extra gain stage...

Vintech uses NOS Neve parts and the EXACT same circuit as a "original" 1272 preamp. Their Dual 72 is EXACTLY the same as a racked 1272 pair in terms of circuitry, transformers and other parts, and they sound identical. Same with the X73 - it's the same as a 1073. If all you want are preamps, 1272's - Vintech, Averill, Marquette, etc. are all pretty much the same and any would be fine. If you want preamp / EQ's, any good 1073 should do it... but they're considerably more expensive. A Vintech X73, with power supply will set you back about $2,000 or so for a single channel. A racked "original" will cost you at LEAST $4,000 - if you can find one. Probably closer to $6K.

IOW, Vintechs are sonically identical, because they're electronically identical and use Neve parts. They're the best bargain for "Neve tone" IMO.

Great River is VERY cool stuff. I have the utmost respect for Dan Kennedy. And Fletcher at Mercenary Audio has similar "gear tastes" to mine, and I respect his opinions also. While I have not heard the MP-2NV, based on the people involved, I can say that it's probably an outstanding product. And I normally wouldn't say that about any gear without hearing it first - so hopefully, that speaks highly of my opinion of Dan and Fletcher... My understanding is that the MP-2NV is "in the style of" a Neve, as opposed to a actual Neve "Clone". My understanding is that it can also do the more transparent, classic "Great River" type tones too, so it may be a more flexible option than a Vintech or Averill rackmounted Neve.

So there you have it. If you're looking for a Neve preamp and are on a budget, the Vintech stuff is probably the best deal. If you want the Neve "name" (and the monetary appreciation that will probably accompany it over time), then an Averill or Marquette racked unit will probably be the unit to choose. If you're looking for a new unit with a bit more sonic flexibility, although not IDENTICAL design to the originals, then check out the Great River stuff.

No matter which of these options you choose, you'll be getting a great preamp that you can rely on and it will definitely be considered "world class" by just about anyone who knows about this stuff.

[BWhat you posted about the neve pre's and great river's were on point. Not too many people know about great river but I learned about those on another web forum.[/B]
Great River is a top notch item, another one ( which I would get before the Great river ) is the PHOENIX AUDIO DRS-1 / DRS-2 ( mono and stereo units ) both are neve like in their own ways but add there own flavor themselves.

Also you got mail folkz...
