fuck i only got it cuz wifey had the dell credit card. i was broke with no other option and went with the one with the highest success rate per duc. ive always been a amd fan and avid hater of intel and their overpriced garbage. but at the time once again thats all that was supported by digi. bleh!!!!

the laptop is fuckin nice and ive actually had no problems aside from the customer service being absolute shit. ill never buy from dell again and not because of quality. theyve provided me with reliable machines for a year and a half but the god damned service is shitty. youre lucky to reach someone who speaks fucking english. it should be a crime to outsource phone jobs. seriously thats fucking despicable. i cant wait to get another amd machine someday. lots cheaper and far more powerful for the buck.

I would have kept the machine and used another app. Cubase, nuendo, sonar, etc. I'm sure some of these would have worked on your computer. I used to use cubase sx and run it through the 002r instead of pro tools, so I know you can do it with the mbox and lalptop. All you would have needed to install is the wave drivers and asio files.

You can undo it, but if those are features you aren't using you should probably leave them off. However, turning those features on aren't going to give you those problems (as far as I can tell.)

Yes, you can use cubase or any other third party software as long as you have the proper drivers (which actually came with the mbox 2 if I'm not mistaken.) However, you will see a significant drop in the number of inputs you are capable of using when you do it.

Man... you guys got Phil all fucked up.

If the laptop came configured by Dell (or any other turnkey manufacturer), I'm sure your registry is loading way too much garbage you'll never need. All that bundled software bullshit that just has to launch an app running in the background taking up needed memory.

Try this Phil...
Open Windows Task Manager (ctrl + alt + del) after boot up. In the bottom right of the frame it should tell you how many processes you're running. My system boots up with 24 which is extremely low. Other tabs in the Task Manager will show how much memory and CPU utilization is being used.

There are a few ways to clean out unwanted processes from launching during start up...

1. Remove anything listed in your Startup group (Start -> All Applications -> Startup).

2. Remove non-vital entries in your registry. To open the regisrty editor go to Start -> Run and type "regedit" -> enter. You must navigate to the following folder HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run...
You may see HELLA shit in there you don't need. The only thing I have in my run folder is the DigidesignMMERefresh driver.

3. trash like AIM, QuickTime and some other apps may need to be configured to NOT launch at boot up in their individual preference configs.

Now, if none of this fixes your ProTools issues, atleast your PC will be running a lot faster.

By the way, adding some plugins (i.e. Reverb, Delay, Chorus) to tracks while recording can increase ProTools buffer usage and is more likely to barf. Save the effects for post... Personally, I limit plugins to ProTools standard Compressor and 4 Band EQ while recording. Saving often will help keep the buffers clear.

Good Luck Phil...

While I commend you for your efforts at helping him bro, none of us here caused Phil to be in his situation or gave him advice that would make the problem worse. The problem needs to be placed on digi design for not making sure compatibility was on point and for providing all of us stooges with poorly written crippleware. In addition, this could be a case of IRQ conflict, a case of "low latency monitoring" being an absolute requirement for stability, the HD crapping out due to being partioned and requiring more time to access the disk (thus keeping the buffer full), buffer damage (which will probably kill his computer over time and could be the cause of lock ups) or bad ram.

If it were myself, I would wipe the system clean and install xp pro with sp2 from scratch. After this, I would test the machine with a different interface than the one being used (002/002r/m-audio device).
