The proportion of the world’s urban population living in slums is 32 per cent. But in developing countries that proportion rises to 43 per cent and in the Least Developed Countries to 78 per cent. Meanwhile 6 per cent of city dwellers in the rich world live in slum-like conditions.
The total number of slum dwellers in the world increased by about 36 per cent during the 1990s. In the next 30 years it will increase to about two billion if no concerted action to address the challenge of slums is taken.
