early human skull

This skull was the first early human fossil to be found in Africa and was subsequently sent to Arthur Smith Woodward, who gave it a new species name "Homo rhodesiensis" (Rhodesian Man). Thought to be at least 125,000 year old, some researchers have suggested that the skull could be a member of the African population from which all modern humans descended.

The skull shows evidence of disease and wounds that occurred in the lifetime of this individual - the upper teeth have cavities, and dental abscesses of the upper jaw are clearly visible.

The human fossil evidence from the Mladeč Caves in Moravia, Czech Republic, excavated more than 100 years ago, has been proven for the first time, through modern radiocarbon dating, to be the oldest cranial, dental and postcranial assemblage of early modern humans in Europe.

The name Ichthyosaur means "fish-lizard", and is an apt descriptor for these sea-going reptiles that predated the earliest dinosaurs by some 20 million years.

This is arguably the most famous fossil in the world. It is also arguably the fossil that has started the most arguments in the world.

Originally touted as evidence of dinosaur to bird evolution, Sir Frederick Hoyle, Chandra Wickramasigne and others suggested it was a forgery. Some are still convinced it is, others never were. Regardless, it is an intriguing fossil to study.
One of the more common evolutionary beliefs today is that birds evolved from dinosaurs. It was suggested that because Archaeopteryx had teeth in its beak, claws on its wings, and feathers that it was an obvious "half bird / half dinosaur".

(In 1994, under the administration of President Bill Clinton the United States Department of Energy disclosed that human radiation experimentation was conducted without consent on prisoners during the 1950's-1970's.)

Almost 100 years ago, on 18 April 1906, San Francisco was wrecked by a massive quake. Hundreds died.
Many are familiar with images of the world's first widely photographed disaster. But few have seen these pictures taken by US adventurer and author Jack London.

The images form part of an exhibition by the California Historical Society, which opens in San Francisco on 9 February.

"Jack London [shown with his wife Charmian] was at the height of his powers as a writer and celebrity when the earthquake struck," Stephen Becker, head of the California Historical Society told the BBC News website.
"This exhibition reveals a side of his talents known before only to a small number of scholars and London fans: He was not only a terrific novelist, but an accomplished photographer."

In 1906, the Bay Area was a centre of photography. While many professional photographers captured images of the quake’s aftermath, thousands of amateur snappers were also able to capture the event. The quake occurred shortly after Kodak launched its first cheap camera with roll film.
London, who lived only 40 miles from San Francisco, headed at once to the city with his camera. These first-ever modern prints are from 1906 original negatives.

His article in Collier's reads: "Wednesday night, while the whole city crashed and roared into ruin, was a quiet night...
"I passed Wednesday night in the path of the advancing flames, and in all those terrible hours I saw not one woman who wept, not one man who was excited, not one person who was in the slightest degree panic stricken…. Before the flames, throughout the night, fled tens of thousands of homeless ones."
