Stop focusing on the names of countries. Focus on the fact that they are both from the Iberian Peninsula. Saying they aren't directly related is like saying Austrians and Hungarians aren't directly related.

Hold up, not to get technical, but Austrians and Hungarians aren't AT ALL directly related. Austrians are germanic like Germans and Swiss, but Hungarians are Magyar -- they didn't even live in Europe until 900 AD when they rode in on their hairy horses from the Asian steppes. Their languages are NOTHING alike. Bad Example.

Portugese/Spain are more like Polish/Ukrainian, or Norweigian/Swedish. It makes a big difference to them, but from the outside, everyone is like "eh, close enough".

^^ Good clarification. I was thinking of the Austro-Hungarian Empire when I said that, but I should have wiki'd it first
Fa' Sho. If you ever look at something written in Magyar (Hungarian) it looks like they are related to Martians, if anybody. Most Latin-based, Germanic or Slavic languages, you can figure out what basic things are by reading them -- 'Polizi', 'Polcia', Police', etc., but when you are in Hungary, the damn cop cars will say 'UGRASIGLLII HALUSEC' (or something like that) and you are all WTF????

I guess they are distantly related to the Finns and the Turks...

P.S. Nationalism is completely stupid and fake. People have been mixing around for millions of years without regards to imaginary lines on a map, so everyone should just get over it, IMO. I mean, rep your culture, by all means but people need to not get their panties in a bundle over it and go to war -- it pretty much only benefits politicians and capitalists. As if Portugese or whoever are -that- different from Africans or Iraqis or whoever.

And while I'm at it, 'whiteness' is even stupider and faker. Too bad white supremacy is real.... How's that for a puzzle.

I don't know but bout Portugese = Spaniards but the two languages are hella different, i have a whole gang of Portugese speaking Brazilian clients and the closest we have as translators are Spanish speaking Mexicans who almost barely know what the Brazillians are saying.

Sketchy B was correct.

You should scope out wikipedia if you'd like more detail.

I am guessing that you've confused some different facts, and are thinking of Turkey.

Props to you Sketchy B for laying down the lesson plan.
