The Iberians were an ancient, Pre-Indo-European people who inhabited the east and southeast of the Iberian Peninsula in prehistoric and historic times. There are two theories concerning their origins:

One theory suggests that they arrived in Spain sometime in the third millennium BC, although their arrival has been dated as early as 4000 BC. Most scholars adhering to this theory believe from archaeological evidence that the Iberians came from a region farther east in the Mediterranean, although some have suggested that they may have originated in North Africa. The Iberians would have then first settled along the eastern coast of Spain, and possibly spread throughout the rest of the Iberian Peninsula later on.[1]

Like the man above said, they are very much the same. What separated the Iberans from other groups was the mountain range dividing Spain and France that I don't feel like looking up the name of...Pyranees or something like this. Just look at the Portuguese and Spanish languages themselves for more proof. Both use a great deal of Arabic loanwords.

Don't be so confused about lines drawn on a map. Spain itself used to be several kingdoms that were then reunited; Quebec is part of, but could easily not be part of, Canada; and so on.

Just because some idiots decided to call Portugees Spanish, doesn't mean they ever were!
Stop focusing on the names of countries. Focus on the fact that they are both from the Iberian Peninsula. Saying they aren't directly related is like saying Austrians and Hungarians aren't directly related.
